ATHENS, Ohio — As a softball fell over the wall at Hunt Softball Park in Elon, North Carolina, a smile grew across senior Maddie Wilcox's (Grove City, Ohio) face. She'd just hit the first home run of her career, a three-run knock, in her last opening weekend.
For Wilcox (Grove City, Ohio), her senior season has been a transformation. She has evolved into a consistent contributor on both sides of the game — a result of years of patience, dedication and behind-the-scenes work.

The outfielder only recorded two hits and two walks in 22 games across the last three years. But this season, Wilcox has emerged as a key piece of the Bobcats' success. She's knocked 25 hits and played in 34 of Ohio's 35 games — 34 of which she started in.
Relentless effort has kept Wilcox on track, much of which came long before the season began. Throughout the fall and winter, the Bobcats spent weekends scrimmaging and getting reps against their own pitchers, something Wilcox believes made a major difference in her ability to handle live pitching during preseason games.
"We did a lot of work in the fall and this winter, before going into season, like hitting every single weekend and scrimmaging each other to prepare for a successful season," Wilcox shared.
Those live reps also built her confidence in the outfield, and it did not come easy to Wilcox. When she thinks back to the adjustment she had to make her freshman year to find her place on the team, the path to her confidence wasn't always green. But with each season, she's pushed herself to earn more opportunities on the field.
One of the biggest factors in her development has been the support of her teammates, especially close friends CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) and Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio). Wilcox has played with Keidel since their travel ball days, and their long-standing chemistry continues to benefit the Bobcats. Hummel has also helped Wilcox grow through their shared commitment to daily improvement and team culture.

Now in the conference portion of the schedule, Wilcox is still unwavering in her pursuit of growth. She constantly reminds herself to not give up no matter the circumstances.
Wilcox didn't expect to have such a large impact this year, but she's proven that persistence can lead to opportunity. It's a mindset she plans to carry with her beyond softball — knowing that setting goals, putting in the work and staying patient can lead to success in any area of life.
"I'm so glad that I kept putting in work and not giving up, because then I wouldn't be where I'm at right now. And it just shows me that I can take this to every aspect of my life, and it's never the end; there's always something that you can set a goal and reach for, and as long as I put in the work, I will get there."
When she thinks back to that game at Elon and watching her first home run crest over the fence, it's a testament to the hours, equaling days, that she dedicated to maturing her talents.
Even though she's already had success, Wilcox is still focused on continuing to be a steady presence for her team and hopes to help lead the Bobcats to a MAC championship. Her approach remains simple but effective: stay confident and take it one game at a time.
