AKRON, Ohio - The No. 4 Ohio softball team (36-19) played its second game of the day, beating No. 5 Central Michigan (25-24) on Thursday afternoon (May 7) in the second round of the MAC Softball Tournament by a score of 15-13. The game saw Ohio come back from being down 13-8, as they rallied to score seven-straight runs.Â
This game also saw senior outfielder Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) set two single season MAC records, as she broke the single season hits record with 87 and the single season runs record with 77.Â
Overall, Ohio scored 15 runs on 14 hits, while committing two errors. Central Michigan scored 13 runs on 14 hits and did not commit an error.Â
At the plate, Hummel was 3-for-3 with two walks and sophomore catcher Jordyn Wycuff (Pataskala, Ohio) was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Junior outfielder Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and senior infielder Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a home run. Graduate student infielder Rylee McDaniel (Ventura, Calif) had one hit with three RBI, while junior infielder Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.Â
In the circle, graduate student Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start and picked up the win, throwing a total of 3.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out three. Senior Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) tossed three innings allowing one run on three hits.Â
The Chippewas were able to get on the board early, going up 2-0 after the top of the first inning.Â
A leadoff single from Hummel followed by back-to-back walks from Bare and Farmer would set up a sac fly from senior infielder Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) that would score Hummel and advance Bare and Farmer. With two runners in scoring position, Wilson roped a double to deep left-center, giving Ohio a 3-2 lead.Â
The very next batter, sophomore DP Sydney Young (Charleston, W. Va.) would hit a deep fly ball that was able to carry over the left-field fence, scoring Farmer and giving Ohio its 82nd home run of the year. Just after that home run Wycuff would step into the box and blast one over the fence in dead centerfield. Her solo home run made it back-to-back home runs for Ohio and three home runs in three-straight games for Wycuff in the MAC Tournament.Â
After 11 Bobcats came to the plate in the bottom of the first, the inning ended with a score of 6-2 with Ohio ahead.Â
Central Michigan would add on two more runs in the top of the second, but Ohio was able to end the inning with some great defense, including a great running catch from Hummel in center.
Farmer joined the home run party as she led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run of her own. Wilson would get on base with a single, but the inning ended with Farmer's home run being the only run scored for Ohio in the bottom of the second.
The Chippewas would load the bases in the top of the third but Moore would be able to escape the jam with some good defense from the left side of the infield as both McDaniel and Westler made plays.
In the bottom of the third, Hummel would drill a double into centerfield for her second hit of the day and 87th hit of the year, which broke the single season MAC hits record.Â
Central Michigan would hit a home run in the top of the fourth inning to make it a two-run game, but Moore and the Ohio defense were able to keep their lead at two after a great play from Westler.
Ohio would extend the lead in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single from Wycuff. The Chippewas would again answer with a big fifth inning, putting up eight runs to take a 13-8 lead.Â
Bare would not go down without a fight however, as she blasted a two-run home run to right-center to make the deficit 13-10. The home run scored Hummel, which was the 77th run of the season for the outfielder, setting a single season MAC record.Â
In the bottom of the sixth Ohio would load the bases after a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, setting the table for McDaniel to crush a bases-clearing double, tying the game at 13-13. Bare would deliver again with a two RBI double, giving Ohio the lead back at 15-13 going into the seventh inning.Â
CMU would look to rally in the top of the seventh, but Miller would strike out the side, securing the Bobcats' 15-13 win. Â
Up next, Ohio will return to action against No. 2 Northern Illinois on Friday, May 8. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Firestone Stadium and can be seen on ESPN+.Â
