AKRON, Ohio - The No. 4 Ohio softball team (36-19) returned to action Thursday afternoon (May 7), falling to No. 1 Akron (32-23) in the second round of the MAC Softball Tournament by a final score of 6-5. In the process, the Bobcats recorded their 81st home run of the season, setting the new Ohio single season home run record previously set in 2013.Â
Overall, Ohio scored five runs on seven hits, while committing one error. Akron scored six runs on seven hits and did not commit an error.Â
At the plate, senior outfielder Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) was 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Sophomore catcher Jordyn Wycuff (Pataskala, Ohio) had a home run and one RBI, along with junior outfielder Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio), who also had one home run and one RBI on the day. Senior infielder Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) had one hit and one walk, while graduate student infielder Rylee McDaniel (Ventura, Calif) finished with one hit and one run scored. Junior infielder Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) ended with a double.
In the circle, graduate student Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start and threw five innings, allowing three earned runs and six hits while also tallying six strikeouts. Senior Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) threw two and two thirds innings while allowing one run on one hit and striking out two batters.Â
To leadoff the top of the first inning, Hummel drilled a ball over the centerfield fence for a towering leadoff home run. Bare would follow it up with a walk and then Farmer would nearly hit another blast, as her swing caromed off the fence in left-center for a double. With two runners in scoring position, Akron was able to close out the top of the first without any further damage, ending the inning with a 1-0 lead in favor of the Bobcats.Â
In the bottom of the first, the Zips would put a runner on third, and tie the game after a passed ball. Akron would put one more on the board before Miller ended the inning with her second strikeout, sending the game to the second with Ohio trailing, 2-1.Â
Another Bobcat blast would tie up the game in the top of the second, as Wycuff made it back-to-back days with a home run. McDaniel would follow it up with a walk, setting up another Hummel home run, this one having enough juice to clear the fence in left-field. Ohio would again put two more runners on, but the Akron defense was able to end the top of the second with the Bobcats holding a lead of 4-2.Â
Miller would make it back-to-back innings of scoreless pitching after going 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third, notching her fifth strikeout in the process.Â
A three-run bottom of the fourth would give the Zips a one run lead, leading to Moore entering the game in relief of Miller. Moore would deliver in the bottom of the fifth, pitching a scoreless frame in her first inning of work.
The Bobcats put two runners on in the top of the sixth, but they weren't able to bring them home, remaining down a run with a score of 5-4 in favor of the Zips. Moore would keep the score the same going into the top of the seventh, throwing her second straight scoreless inning.Â
The Bobcats looked to rally in the top of the seventh. With one out, Wilson battled back in a great at-bat, finishing it off by launching a home run over the right-field fence to tie the game. Wilson's home run was not only clutch, but record breaking, as it was the 81st home run of the season for Ohio, breaking the school record for team home runs in a season.Â
Akron was able to keep the score tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but a sac-fly with the bases loaded ended the game, giving Akron the 6-5 win.Â
The Bobcats will learn their opponent, date and time following the conclusion on Thursday's second game.Â
