BEAUMONT, Texas – The Ohio softball team (1-3) returned to action Saturday at the Cardinal Classic. The Bobcats began the day defeating Lamer, 7-2, before falling to Creighton, 9-8 Saturday night.
GAME ONE: Ohio 7, Lamar 2
Overall, Ohio scored seven runs on nine hits and committed two errors, while Lamar recorded two runs on two hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, graduate student
Megan McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while senior
Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Fifth year
Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded a hit, RBI and run scored, while senior
Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) had a double, two RBI and a run scored and fifth year
Brooke Rice (Mason Ohio) had a single, RBI and run scored. Freshman
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) and sophomore
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) both scored a run, while sophomore
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) added an RBI for the Bobcats
After two innings of little action, Ohio got their first hit of the game in the top of the third inning when McMenemy led off with a single to second. Unfortunately, Ohio was unable to capitalize and ended the frame with the game still scoreless.
The Ohio offense came alive in the top of the fourth inning. Spacek led off with a double to left and moved to third when Keidel reached on a fielder's choice. Ohio took the lead moments later a two RBI double from Fogue. Ohio then went up 4-0 after a two-RBI single from Rice, forcing Lamar to make a pitching change.
Still with no outs, McMenemy singled, putting runners on first and second. With one out, Rice scored on a ground out by O'Brien. After Englant reached on a bunt single, Spacek registered her second hit of the inning, scoring Englant. In all, the Bobcats scored seven runs on six hits and eft one on base, taking a 7-0 lead going to the bottom of the inning.
Lamar got on the board in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on a two-run home run, cutting the Ohio lead to 7-2 after four full innings of play.
The Bobcats attempted to add on in the top of the fifth with McMenemy's third hit of the day, however she would not score, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with Ohio still leading, 7-2.
The Ohio defense held strong over the next two defensive frames, sending the Cardinals down in order in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
After Ohio left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Lamar came to the plate to generate a rally, however senior
Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) and the Ohio defense held solid, forcing the Cardinals to go down in order for the third-straight innings, sealing the 7-2 victory.
In the circle, Kohl (1-1) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walked two and struck out five for her first win of the season.
GAME TWO: Creighton 9, Ohio 8
Overall, Ohio scored eight runs on eight hits and committed three errors, while Creighton score nine runs on 10 hits and committed one error.
Overall, Englant when 4-for-4 with a double triple, RBI and three runs scored, while Keidel went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Paoli added a hit with a home run and two RBI, while Fogue also hit a homerun. O'Brien concluded a day with a hit and a run scored.
Creighton opened the game scoring a run on to take an early 1-0 lead. Ohio responded in the bottom of the frame with Ohio scoring three runs, with the help of a two-run home run from Paoli putting Ohio up 3-1 after one inning of play.
In the top of the second Creighton took a 7-3 lead, however, the Bobcats cut the Creighton lead to one in the bottom of the frame with the help of a two-RBI single from Keidel.
After Creighton took an 8-6 lead in the third inning, Ohio tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth inning with Ohio scoring two runs to tie the game up. Creighton took the lead in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly, helping seal the 9-8 win for the BlueJays.

Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched seven innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits, walked two and struck out six.

The Bobcats are back in action for the final day at the Cardinal Classic when Ohio takes on New Mexico at 10 p.m.
