Ohio Softball Concludes First Day at Cardinal Classic

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Ohio softball team (0-2) opened the 2022 season this afternoon (Feb. 18) at the 2022 Cardinal Classic hosted by Lamar University. The Bobcats dropped their first game of the day to Creighton (4-2), 8-2, before returning later in the day against New Mexico (3-2), falling 4-2. 
 
GAME ONE: Creighton 8, Ohio 2
Overall, Ohio scored two runs on seven hits and committed two errors, while Creighton scored eight runs on 11 hits and committed one error. 
 
Individually, freshman CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) began her Ohio career with two hits, while fifth year Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) had one hit, and sophomore Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) registered a triple. Fifth year Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) recorded a double, while sophomore Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) added one hit and one run scored. 
 
The Bobcats opened the season on defense and turned an inning-ending double play to close out the top of the first. In the bottom of the frame, Keidel got the first hit of the season on a single left field, however the Bobcats were unable to capitalize on the two-out hit. 
 
Creighton struck first in the top of the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single. 
 
Ohio got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Rice led the inning off with a double to left. After graduate student Tori Walker (Plain City, Ohio) entered the game to pinch run for Rice, she later scored on a double steal after Englant drew a walk. Unfortunately, Creighton got the run back in the top of the third, scoring two runs on four hits and one error. 
 
The Bobcats threatened in the bottom of the third, loading the bases, however Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the top of the fourth with Ohio trailing, 4-1. 
 
Creighton got another run in the top of the fourth, but the Bobcats responded at the bottom of the frame. O'Brien led the inning off with a single to left and then stole second. She then scored after an RBI single from senior Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas), cutting the Creighton lead to 5-2. However, the BlueJays responded in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits to take an 8-2 lead going into the bottom of the frame. 
 
Despite a Paoli triple in the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats were unable to generate a comeback, falling to Creighton, 8-2. 
 
In the circle, senior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing eight run on 11 hits, walked five and struck out seven. 
 
GAME TWO: New Mexico 4, Ohio 2
Overall Ohio scored two runs on six hits, including two doubles, while New Mexico scored four runs on 10 hits and one error. 
 
Individually, Paoli went 2-of-3 with 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Englant went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) registered a double, while O'Brien also registered a hit and a run scored. 
 
New Mexico struck first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on three hits, while leaving the bases loaded. The Lobos added on in the bottom of the second innings, taking a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs on five hits. 
 
The Bobcats got their first hit of the game in the top of the third innings after Englant reached on a two-out single. However, the Bobcats were unable to get on the board, ending the inning trailing 4-0. 
 
The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Paoli singled and then scored on a double to left from Fogue. Paoli then scored after a wild pitch, cutting the New Mexico lead to 4-1. After New Mexico went down in order in the bottom of the frame, Ohio continued to chip away at the Lobos' lead. With one out in the top of the fifth, O'Brien drew a walk. She then stole second and advanced to third in an error. Minutes later, O'Brien scored after an RBI single to left by Englant, cutting the New Mexico lead to 4-2. 
 
The Bobcats attempted to add on in the top of the sixth inning. Paoli led the inning off with a double to left, however, Ohio was unable to capitalize. Sending the game to the bottom of the inning still trailing 4-2.
 
The Bobcats attempted to put together a rally in the top of the seventh inning. After freshman Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) led the inning off with a walk, she reached second after O'Brien reached on a bunt single. Englant then reached on a fielder's choice, however, Ohio was unable to capitalize on the base runners, falling 4-2. 
 
In the circle, senior Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) got her first start as a Bobcat, pitching six innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits, one walk and one strikeout. 
 
UP NEXT
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Feb 19 for day two of the Cardinal Classic. Ohio will take on host Lamar at noon, followed by another matchup with Creighton at 5 p.m.
