BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (10-23, 6-13 MAC) fell 14-5 in game one of its series at Bowling Green (21-11, 16-0 MAC) on Friday, April 19.
Junior
Jackson Cauthron (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led the Bobcats with two runs, including one home run, a hit and three RBI's on three at bats. Freshman
JR Nelson (Vernon Hills, Ill.) recorded two hits on four at bats and scored a run for Ohio. Fifth year
Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) finished two-for-three at the plate, tallying one run and one RBI.
Junior
Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) started on the mound for Ohio. In 5.2 innings pitched, Masters allowed nine runs, recorded eight strikeouts on 26 at bats and faced a total of 31 batters. Redshirt junior
Patrick Straub (Naperville, Ill.) relieved Masters in the sixth inning while redshirt junior
Luke Borer (Perrysburg, Ohio) and graduate student
Carson Denham (Cape May Court House, N.J.) pitched one inning each for Ohio.
Bowling Green earned an early 1-0 lead with its first batter hitting a home run to left center in the bottom of the first inning.
Ohio had a couple opportunities to get on the board in the top of the third, but the Bobcats were unable to capitalize and finished that half inning with a hit and two players left on base. In the bottom of the third, Bowling Green's offense came out strong and utilized several errors by the Bobcats to increase its lead to 4-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, Ohio finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. After being walked,
JR Nelson recorded two stolen bases and found himself at third when Finney hit a single to left field. Finney's base hit brought in Nelson and altered the score to 4-1, still in Bowling Green's favor.
The Falcons answered back with two runs and largened their lead to 6-1 at the conclusion of the fifth inning.
Cauthron scored Ohio's second run of the game off redshirt junior
Nick Dolan's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) single through the right field. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats trailed Bowling Green 6-2.
Bowling Green increased its lead to 11-2 as the two teams headed into the seventh inning.
A three-run homer by Cauthron nearly cut Bowling Green's lead in half with runs by graduate student
Bryce Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.), Finney and Cauthron. At the end of the seventh inning, Ohio trailed the Falcons 14-5.
Bowling Green ultimately went on to win the game, 14-5.
