OXFORD, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio softball team (32-23) concluded the 2023 season on Saturday (May 13), falling in the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game, 6-2, to top-seeded Miami (37-18), inside the Miami Softball Stadium.
After the game, junior
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa), sophomore
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) and freshman
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Overall, Ohio scored two runs on four hits and committed one error, while Miami scored six runs on seven hits and committed one error.
Individually, Junior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a hit, while senior
Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) had a double and a run scored. Junior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) and sophomore
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) both had a hit and an RBI for the Bobcats. Meanwhile, Hoffner drew two walks, while Grein and Dawe also drew walks for Ohio.
In the circle, redshirt freshman
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing six runs, five earned on seven hits, while walking five and striking out six.
The RedHawks got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Ohio threatened in the top of the second, loading the bases with two outs after Hoffner and Grein drew walks and Keidel was hit by a pitch. However, the Miami defense was able to force an Ohio ground out, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with Ohio trailing, 2-0.
Miami added on in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on three hits, including an RBI double, putting the RedHawks up 5-0 after two innings of play.
After a scoreless bottom of the third for Miami, Ohio got on the board in the top of the fourth. After Hoffner drew her second walk of the game, Dawe drew one of her own. After runners advanced on a ground out. Moments later, back-to-back singles from Grein and Keidel, out two runs on the board, cutting the Ohio deficit to 5-2 going to the bottom of the fourth.
Miami threatened again in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, however, the Ohio defense was able to get the final batter of the inning to fly out, sending the game to the top of the fifth still trailing, 5-2. Ohio looked to get another run in the top of the fifth, with Logan reaching on a leadoff single. However, Miami would work out of the jam, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with Ohio still trailing 5-2.
Miami got a run back in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI triple, increasing the RedHawks' lead to 6-2 after five full frames. Ohio looked to get the run back in the top of the sixth. After Dawe led the inning off with a double to center. Then with one out, Grein reached on an error, putting runners on first and second. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the sixth trailing, 6-2.
The Bobcats looked to rally in the top of the seventh inning, however the Ohio offense was unable to generate any runs, falling by the final of 6-2.
