BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Ohio softball team (3-9) returned to action on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 26) for the final day of the Camel Stampede hosted by Campbell. The Bobcats wrapped up the weekend falling to 14th-ranked Duke (12-3), 7-0.
Overall, Ohio did not score a run on two hits and committed one error, while Duke scored seven runs on six hits and committed one error.
Individually, junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) had one hit, as did senior Alexis Dawe (alley Springs, Calif.), who also drew a walk. Freshman Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) also drew a walk.
In the circle, graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and walked one batter. Redshirt freshman Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) pitched six innings, allowing one earned one, walked one and struck out one batter.
Duke struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second for Ohio, Duke added on in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits to go up 4-0 early in the game. The Bobcats got a baserunner on in the top of the third when sophomore Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) was hit by a pitch. However, she would be stranded at first.
Duke added on in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on two hits and one error to increase their lead to 7-0 after three full frames. Ohio got its first hit in the top of the fourth inning when Paoli opened the inning with a leadoff single to right. She then moved to second when Dawe drew a walk, placing runners on first and second with no outs. However, the Bobcats were unable to get a run across, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with Ohio trailing, 7-0.
After the Ohio defense forced Duke to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats were able to get more baserunners in the top of the sixth when Hummel drew a walk and then Dawe reached on a single. Unfortunately, Ohio was unable to capitalize on the baserunners. After Ohio send the Blue Devils down in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats looked to rally in the top of the seventh, however they were unable to generate much offense, falling 7-0.
Ohio is back. In action March 3-5 at the EKU Tournament where Ohio will take on Dayton, Eastern Kentucky and Indiana State,
