BEAUMONT, Texas – The Ohio softball team (1-4) wrapped up its first weekend of competition on Sunday (Feb. 20), falling to New Mexico (6-3), 9-1 in five innings, on the final day of the Cardinal Classic.
Overall, Ohio scored one run on two hits and committed seven errors, while New Mexico scored nine runs on 11 hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, fifth year
Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) recorded a hit and junior
Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) had a hit and an RBI, while sophomore
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) scored a run.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the top of the second inning. After Paoli walked to lead off the inning, she would score later in the inning on an RBI single by Dawe, giving Ohio an early 1-0 lead. However, New Mexico tied the game up in the bottom of the frame, scoring on an Ohio error, knotting the game at 1-1.
The Bobcats threatened in the top of the third, putting two runners on, however, would be unable to retake the lead. The Lobos took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring on an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead after three innings.
After a scoreless top of the fourth for Ohio, New Mexico increased their lead, scoring six runs on five hits and three errors, going up 8-1 going into the top of the fifth inning. After a scoreless frame for Ohio, New Mexico added a run in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 9-1 win.
In the circle, senior
Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) got the start, pitching 3.1 innings, while allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Senior
Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out one.
UP NEXT
The Bobcats are back in action Feb. 25-27 when they head to Bowling Green, Ky. To take part in the Hilltopper Spring Fling. While there, the Bobcats will take on Illinois State, Western Kentucky and Dayton.
