ROCK HILL, S.C. - Ten players reached home plate as the Ohio softball team scored a season-high 13 runs to defeat Fairfield, 13-4, on day two of the Winthrop Adidas Invitational.
Leading the way was senior Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) with a career-high four runs. Waters scored each of the four times she walked at bat. Nine other players scored a run apiece. Waters leads the team with 11 runs scored this season.
The Bobcats (6-6) opened the game with an 8-0 run, scoring a run in top of the first and seven in the top of the second. Waters scored the first run of the game and one in the second. Freshman Kelly Krueger (Perrysburg, Ohio) scored the first run of her career in the second inning as a pinch runner. She was batted in on a single to left field by senior Alicia Catlette (Mogadore, Ohio). Catlette finished the game 1-for-1 with a run, an RBI and a walk.
Ohio scored again in the top of the fourth inning, but Fairfield countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-3 Bobcat lead.
Sophomore Rachel Denham (West Chester, Ohio) scored the lone run in the fourth for Ohio, her first one of the season. Denham hit her first career double at bat and was sent home on an RBI single to left field by freshman Emily Wethington (New Palestine, Ind.). Wethington went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI.
Both teams scored in the fifth inning. Fairfield scored one run, while Ohio scored two to push its lead to 11-4. The Stags would not score again, as Ohio scored two more runs in the top of the seventh for the victory.
Senior pitcher Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) pitched her fourth complete game of the season and the 41st of her career. Sauter had four strikeouts, allowed only two walks and four runs. With the win, her record improves to 3-2.
For the game, the Bobcats totaled 10 hits and two errors, while the Stags had eight hits and two errors.
"We were fortunate to get the game in between the storms this afternoon,' said Head Coach Jill Matyuch. "A number of players were able to get into the game and contribute, that was nice to see."
Ohio's second game of the day against Albany was rescheduled to tomorrow at 11 a.m. because of inclement weather conditions.
