ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Ohio softball team wrapped up the Winthrop Invitational with a 2-1 loss to Albany in an extra-inning game Sunday afternoon. Senior Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) was named to the all-tournament team.
"Albany is a very good defensive team," said Head Coach Jill Matyuch. "They make good adjustments at the plate and they are a very aggressive base-running team. Our defense handled that pressure well. We created opportunities offensively and gave ourselves a chance."
Maureen McKelvey (Stow, Ohio) scored her third run of the season in the top of the second inning to put Ohio (6-7) first on the scoreboard. McKelvey singled to left field at bat, advanced to second on a ground ball and scored on an RBI single by Deanna Hartsough (Santa Ana, Calif.). Hartsough went 1-for-2 in the game with the RBI and a walk. McKelvey went 2-for-3.
Albany tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third and both teams went scoreless till the end of regulation, forcing an extra inning. The Bobcats couldn't convert in the extra round, but the Great Danes scored in their half of the inning for the win.
Freshman Emily Wethington (New Palestine, Ind.) made her eighth appearance in the pitching circle and the fifth start of her career. Wethington finished the game with five strikeouts. She allowed two runs and five walks.
"We played hard today," said Matyuch. "We also got a gutty performance out of Emily (Wethington)."
The Bobcats will compete in its fourth tournament of the season next weekend. The `Cats will compete in the Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Tourney participants include Georgetown, Rutgers, Radford and host Virginia.
