ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (20-8, 3-0 MAC) picked up their 20
th win of the season Saturday afternoon (March 22), defeating Buffalo (5-20, 2-4 MAC), 6-2, at the Ohio Softball Field, securing the three-game sweep of the Bulls to open Mid-American Conference play.
Overall, Ohio scored six runs on six hits and committed two errors, while Buffalo scored two runs on four hits and committed three errors.
Individually, freshman
Abby Kennelly (Waterville, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman
Sydney Young (Charleston, W. Va.) added a double and two RBI. Senior
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) had one hit, RBI and scored a run, while senior
Maddie Wilcox (Grove City, Ohio) had a hit, two RBI and a run scored. Senior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) also added a hit and a run scored for the Bobcats.
In the circle, sophomore
Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking and striking out three. Redshirt junior
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) pitched the seventh inning and did not allow a run or a hit, while walking one and striking out two.
Ohio struck in the bottom of the first inning. After Yuhas drew a walk to lead off the inning and then stole second, Keidel responded with an RBI single to center to put the Bobcats on the board. After both sophomore
Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) and senior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) reached to load the bases, a two-RBI single from Wilcox put Ohio up 3-0. The Bobcats would add two more runs before the inning was over with sacrifice flies from Kennelly and Young, giving Ohio a 5-0 lead headed into the second inning.
UB looked to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning when the Bulls got runners on the corners with two outs. However, the Ohio defense was able to record the final out, keeping the Bobcats up 5-0 headed into the bottom of the inning.
Buffalo got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, scoring on an RBI single, cutting the Ohio lead to 5-1 headed into the bottom of the frame.
Ohio got the run back in the bottom of the fifth after Kennelly scored on an RBI double from Young, giving Ohio the 6-1 lead. However, UB once again go the run back in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a two-out triple, scoring on an RBI single, to cut the lead back to 6-2 headed into the bottom of the sixth.
Ohio looked to add on in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on first and third with two outs. However, the Bulls were able to record the final out of the inning, sending the game to the seventh with Ohio still leading, 6-2.
UB looked to rally in the top of the seventh, getting a runner on with two outs, however, Miller was able to get the final batter to strikeout, securing the 6-2 victory.
Up next, the Bobcats head to DeKalb, Ill. March 28-29 for a three-game series with Northern Illinois.
