Athens, Ohio – The Ohio Women's Soccer Team (3-8-5, 1-4-4 MAC) returned to Athens, Ohio, for a MAC matchup with the University of Buffalo (11-3-1, 7-2-0 MAC) on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore
Iro Fakinou (Athens, Greece) was able to score a late-game goal to cut the deficit in half, but the Bobcats were unable to score again, ultimately falling to the Bulls 2-1.
Overall, Ohio outshot Buffalo 14-6, with each team having five shots on goal. Ohio had seven corner opportunities, while the Bulls had three.
Individually, Fakinou scored the lone goal of the day and recorded two shots, both of which were on goal. Senior
Rayann Pruss (Perrysburg, Ohio) led the Bobcats' offensive efforts with five shots, with one on goal. Senior
Scout Murray (Chicago, Ill.) and junior
Anna Burchett each had one shot with one shot on goal, while grad student
Quintin Tostevin (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and juniors
Jaimason Brooker (Powell, Ohio) and
Melia Peer (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and
Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich.) all had shots for the Bobcats.
Senior
Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio) played all 90 minutes in net for the Bobcats, surrendering two goals. Sloma faced six shots and had 3 saves on the day.
Ohio brought the offense early and often in the first five minutes of play. Robinson registered the first shot for Ohio in the 23
rd second of play, but her shot was blocked. Murray looked to give the Bobcats the lead off a corner in the first minute, but could not beat the Buffalo keeper.
In the third minute, Brooker attempted a shot that missed high of the target. Pruss also registered a shot in the fifth minute but missed high.
Ohio's next opportunity came in the 24
th minute off the foot of Pruss, but the shot was off target.
In the 26
th minute, Buffalo was able to beat Sloma off a set-piece corner. The Bulls take the first-half lead 1-0.
Burchett looked to tie the game in the 36
th minute but would be denied by the Bulls' keeper. In the 44
th minute, the Bobcats had their last opportunity of the half, but Fakinou's shot to the bottom left corner was stopped by the Buffalo keeper.
After 45 minutes of play, the Bobcats trail the Bulls 1-0. Ohio registered seven shots in the half compared to Buffalo's three, with the Bobcats having three shots on goal to the Bulls' two. Each team had three corner chances.
Ohio's first opportunity of the second half came in the 52
nd minute, but Brooker's shot missed high. Pruss had another chance in the 54
th minute that forced the Bulls keeper to make a save.
The Bobcats kept the offensive pressure with a shot in the 56
th minute, but Tostevin's shot was off target.
In the 63
rd minute, Buffalo was able to extend their lead to 2-0 off a header opportunity. Ohio looked to cut the deficit right away, but the shot attempt from Pruss was blocked.
Peer attempted her first shot in the 75
th minute, but her attempt missed the target. On her fifth attempt of the afternoon, Pruss looked to break the shutout in the 80
th minute but was unsuccessful.
In the 87
th minute, Fakinou was able to break through the Bulls' defense and score the Bobcats' first goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Ohio kept the offensive pressure during the final few minutes of the play, but was unable to score again, falling to Buffalo 2-1 after 90 minutes.
The Bobcats stay in Athens this Sunday, Oct. 19
th, when they take on MAC opponent Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. The match can be watched on ESPN+.
