KENT, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (17-18, 5-6 MAC) returned to action Tuesday afternoon (April 2), beating the weather, and sweeping Kent State (18-12, 4-4 MAC) in a doubleheader. The Bobcats took game one, 7-2, before downing the Flashes, 4-2, in game two.
GAME ONE: Ohio 7, Kent State 1
Overall, Ohio scored seven runs on 11 hits and committed one error, while Kent State scored one run on four hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, freshman
Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while freshman
Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Sophomore
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) added a home run and two RBI, while senior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) also had two hits, one double, one run scored and one RBI, while senior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) added a double and junior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) had one hit, drew two walks and scored two runs.
In the circle, redshirt sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing one run, none earned, while walking one and striking out six.
Kent State got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on an error to take a 1-0 lead into the second inning. Ohio responded in the top of the second. After Grein reached on a two-out double, Wilson drove her in on a double of her own, tying the game at 1-1.
The Bobcats took the lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run from Westler and an RBI single from Farmer, giving Ohio a 4-1 read going into the bottom of the third. After the Bobcats kept Kent State off the board for the next two innings, Ohio added on in the top of fifth after a lead-off home run from Logan gave the Bobcats a 5-1 lead.
Kent State looked to get some runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a leadoff single. However, the Ohio defense held strong, getting out of the inning, and sending the game to the seventh with the 5-1 lead.
The Bobcats added on in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on two hits, taking a 7-1 lead into the final frame. Kent State looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, however, Miller and the Ohio defense sent the Flashes down in order, securing the 7-1 win.
GAME TWO: Ohio 4, Kent State 2
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on six hits and committed one error, while Kent State scored two runs on 10 hits and committed three errors.
Individually, sophomore
Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with a triple and RBI, while Hoffner recorded a home run and one RBI. Grein went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBI, while junior
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Westler added one hit, while Logan scored two runs.
In the circle, freshman
Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching four innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits. She did not walk a batter, while striking out one. Miller entered the game in the fifth inning, pitching three innings, while not allowing a run on three hits and striking out two and picking up her second win of the day.
Just as in game one, Kent State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single. However, the Bobcats knotted the game at one apiece in the top of the third inning on an RBI triple from Hummel, scoring Keidel from second.
The Bobcats took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. After Logan reached on an error, she would later score on a two-out triple from Grein, giving Ohio a 2-1 lead. Kent State would go on to tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single, sending the game to the sixth inning knotted at 2-2.
The Bobcats retook the lead in the top of the sixth on sacrifice fly from Grein, scoring Logan from third and giving Ohio a 3-2 lead. After the Ohio defense sent Kent State down in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats added on in the top of the seventh with a leadoff home run from Hoffner, putting Ohio up 4-2 entering the final frame.
Kent State looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with the first two base runners reaching on singles. Then with one out, the Flashes loaded the bases, however Miller was able to get the final two batters to strike out and fly out, securing the 4-2 victory.
UP NEXT
The Bobcats return to Athens April 6-7 for a three-game series with Northern Illinois. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., with Sunday's single game set to start at 12 p.m.
