KENT, Ohio – The Ohio Bobcats Field Hockey team (3-3) scored a last-minute goal to defeat Kent State (2-7) 3-2 in Kent this Friday (Sept. 22). The Bobcats captured their first MAC win of the season on the road, bringing their record back up to even on the season.
Overall, the Bobcats recorded nine shots, with five coming on target. The Bobcats accrued four penalty corners, while facing nine. The Bobcats' defense held strong, recording six saves on 14 total shots.
Individually, the Bobcats were led by fifth year
Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) who registered her fifth and sixth goals of the season against the Golden Flashes. Sophomore
Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) scored her first goal of the season on a game-winner the late 59
th minute. Whittle notched a team-high four shots, with three coming on goal. Both junior
Merle Kal (Harlem, The Netherlands) and freshman
Pauline Hartlieb (Leverkusen, Germany) notched assists in the Bobcats' comeback effort. Four Bobcats played the full game, including Junior
Bodhi Littlefield (Oakland, Maine) and senior
Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.).
In net, senior
Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) played the full 60 minutes, saving six shots on eight attempts. The former MAC Defensive Player of the Week had another great week, limiting the Flashes' offense to two goals.
The Bobcats defense was the focal point of the first quarter, facing seven shots total, with two on target. The Golden Flashes scored early, but the Bobcats defense never waivered. The Bobcats took the one-goal difference into the second quarter.
The Bobcats' remained a goal down throughout the second quarter, but were able to register a shot on goal from Whittle. The Bobcats remained on the defensive throughout the second quarter, but looked to stay on the hunt. At the end of the half, the Bobcats remained down one, and were outshot 2-9.
The third quarter was an eventful turning point for the Bobcats, with the first goal coming from Whittle. The goal was unassisted, but was Whittle's fifth goal of the season, which lead the team. The previous MAC Offensive Player of the Week scored her fifth goal in six games. The Bobcats dominated the third quarter, but were unable to find another score in the quarter. The match remained tied into the fourth.
The Golden Flashes were able to gain a penalty stroke in the 55
th minute, which was slotted into the left corner. Being down a goal, the Bobcats pulled Lotze to bring freshman
Johanna Hildebrandt (Berlin, Germany) on the field, where less than 2 minutes later Whittle was able to find her second goal of the day and sixth of the season. The Bobcats were able to continue to mount pressure, which lead to consecutive penalty corners. In the late 59
th minute, off of a penalty corner feed by Whittle, Dikotla was able to gain a deflection into the Kent State net, leading to the game-winning goal. It was Dikotla's first goal of the season at the perfect time for the win. The Bobcats scored two goals in two minutes to secure a win over the Flashes, their first win in 13 games against the Kent State.
