ATLANTA, Ga. â€" Despite a four-run fifth inning, the Ohio baseball team (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season to the Georgia State Panthers (5-4),
10-8, on Friday afternoon in the GSU Baseball Complex in Atlanta, Ga.
Georgia State grabbed an early lead against Ohio with a five-run second inning in which they recorded four hits.
The Bobcats got on the board in the third, with Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) reaching on a fielder’s choice to send Garrett Black across the plate.
A solo home run by Georgia State’s Caden Bailey matched Ohio’s run in the third, followed by an unearned Panther run in the fourth to extend their lead.
A four-run fifth inning by Ohio followed, closing in on the Panther’s advantage. A two-RBI single off the bat of Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) began the momentum, driving Mitch Longo (Mayfield, Ohio) and Manny De Jesus (Caguas, Puerto Rico) home. An RBI double by Wells followed, scoring Madsen, who reached base on a walk. An RBI by John Adryan (Delran N.J.) followed, bringing Gaertner full-circle.
Both teams posted two runs in the seventh as the Panthers held a slight lead over the Cats.
A solo homer by Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) in the seventh brought the Georgia State lead to just one run. This marks the senior’s third home run in two consecutive games.
Georgia State put up one run in the bottom of the eighth and retired Ohio’s batters in order in the ninth to solidify its 10-8 win.
Ohio pitcher Mason McWilliams (Belevue, Ohio) was charged with the loss, allowing three hits, two runs, one of which was earned, and striking out one over his two innings on the mound.
Georgia State’s Marc-Andre Habeck picked up his second win for the Panthers, tossing one inning in which he allowed two hits and one run.
Ohio and Georgia State will face off in the second game of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the GSU Baseball Complex.
