THE BASICS
The Ohio baseball team (6-2) could not overcome an eight-run first inning by Georgia State (6-4), falling by an 11-4 count on Saturday (Feb. 28) at the GSU Baseball Complex in Atlanta. The Panthers clinched the weekend series with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgia State pounded out 11 runs on 13 hits -- including an eight-run first frame that included six hits. Ohio tallied five base knocks.
- Senior Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) led the Bobcats with a 2-for-4 effort and scored a run.
- Five Panthers posted multi-hit efforts, with junior Joey Roach leading the way with a triple and a single while driving in a game-high three runs.
- Junior Cam Sperry added a double, a single, two runs scored and a walk.
- Junior right-handed starting pitcher Connor Sitz (Westerville, Ohio) took the loss on the mound for Ohio, falling to 2-1 on the season. He allowed eight runs -- only one of which was earned on five hits and two walks in two thirds of an inning. He struck out one.
- Senior righty Jeremy Cronk (North Plans, Ore.), senior southpaw Spencer Sapp (Jasper, Ind.) and sophomore right-hander Corey Wells (Lexington, Ky.) combined to toss four scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Bobcats. Cronk struck out one and walked one over two frames, Sapp fanned one in two thirds of an inning and Wells fanned two and surrendered a hit in an inning and a third.
- Senior left-handed starting pitcher Kenny Anderson picked up the win for the Panthers, fanning four while giving up three earned runs on four hits and three walks in six innings to improve to 1-1 on the season.
- The Panthers did the bulk of their damage in the first inning, with a two-run triple down the right field line by Roach setting the tone for the frame.
- The Bobcats responded with a three-run inning in the top of the second to cut Georgia State's lead to five runs. Tyler Wells got things started with a leadoff single to first., and redshirt junior Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior John Adryan (Delran, N.J.) followed by coaxing back-to-back walks. Wells and Gaertner scored on back-to-back RBI groundouts by redshirt senior Kyle Dean (Athens, Ohio) and sophomore Tyler Finkler (Olmstead Falls, Ohio). Redshirt senior Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio) made it an 8-3 contest when he drove home Adryan with an RBI single to center.
- Unfortunately for Ohio, Georgia State tallied single runs in the ensuing three frames. Junior Matt Rose hit a leadoff triple down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by senior Caden Bailey in the second. Sophomore Ryan Blanton legged out a leadoff bunt single to third and scored one out later on a single to center by Roach in the third. Sperry cracked a one-out double to right and later scored on an Ohio throwing error for the Panthers' final run of the contest in the fourth.
- Ohio got one run back in the seventh when Dean was hit by a pitch with one out and scored one out later when junior Manny De Jesus reached on a fielder's choice.

UP NEXT
Ohio looks to close the weekend with a win when it battles Georgia State on Sunday (March 1) in the final contest of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Redshirt senior lefty Evan Geist (Roswell, Ga.) is scheduled to start on the hill for the Bobcats. He is expected to face junior right-hander Cole Uvila.
