THE BASICS
Redshirt senior southpaw Evan Geist (Roswell, Ga.) had a no-hitter going through the fifth inning, but the Ohio baseball team (6-3) dropped its weekend series finale to Georgia State (7-4), 3-1, on Sunday (March 1) in Atlanta.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Geist rendered the Panthers hitless until giving up two base knocks in the bottom of the sixth. He fanned six while allowing three earned runs on two hits and five walks in five and two-thirds of an inning of work. Geist fell to 1-1 on the season.
- Sophomore-handed pitcher Christian Botter (Toronto, Canada) tossed a scoreless two-thirds of an inning, and senior righty Jake Miller (Westerville, Ohio) followed by throwing an inning and two-thirds of scoreless ball. Miller fanned one and did not allow a base runner.
- Senior right-handed pitcher Connor Stanley earned the pitching victory in relief for Georgia State. He struck out two and did not allow a base runner to pick up his first win of the season.
- Senior righty Kevin Burgee picked up his second save of the season for the Panthers, surrendering a hit before coaxing a game-ending double play with the tying run at the plate.
- Georgia State junior right-handed starting pitcher Cole Uvila worked five and a third of an inning, striking out three while allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks.
- Four Bobcats posted hits, with senior Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) doubling for Ohio's only extra-base hit of the game.
- Junior Matt Rose led the Panthers at the plate with a two-RBI double in the sixth.
- Ohio landed the first punch in the fourth inning when redshirt senior Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Georgia State fielding error, moved to third on a single through the right side by sophomore Mitch Longo (Mayfield, Ohio) and then tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Madsen.
- Geist kept Georgia State's bats in check until the sixth when sophomore Ryan Blanton broke up his no-hit bid with a base hit through the right side. Junior James Clements followed by drawing a walk. Both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Junior Joey Roach loaded the bases by coaxing a free pass to set the table for Rose's two-RBI double to left, giving the Panthers the lead. Roach then scored Georgia State's third run on an RBI groundout to second by senior Caden Bailey.
- The Bobcats had the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth after senior Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) cracked a one-out single up the middle, but a double play ended Ohio's comeback bid.
