Ohio Softball Falls to No. 22 Ohio State

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (31-13) returned to action on Tuesday evening (April 22), falling No. 22 Ohio State (38-7-1), 15-5 in five innings at the Ohio Softball Field. 

Ohio scored five runs on five hits and committed four errors, while Ohio State scored 15 runs on 13 hits and committed one error. 

At the plate, senior CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while senior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) had a hit and three RBI. Senior Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) had one hit and scored two runs, while sophomore Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) had one double. Sophomore Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) registered one RBI. 

In the circle, freshman Anna Wise (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and pitched 2.1 innings and struck out two, while junior Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) pitched two-thirds of an inning and struck out one.

After Wise sent the Buckeyes down in order to open the game, the Bobcats got on the board first in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Keidel drew a walk and then advanced to third on a double to left from Farmer. Moments later, Hoffner drove a ball to left, allowing Keidel to score on the sacrifice fly to give Ohio a 1-0 lead headed into the second inning. 

Ohio State struck in the top of the second on a two-run home run to left center, taking a 2-1 lead headed into the bottom of the second. The Buckeyes added on in the top of the third inning, scoring six runs on five hits and one error to take an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the third. 

The Bobcats got two runs back in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Yuhas drew a walk and then moved to third when Keidel singled and moved to second. Moments later, Farmer drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Hoffner then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Yuhas to score, followed by Keidel who scored on an error by the shortstop on the same play, cutting the deficit to 8-3 going into the fourth inning. 

Ohio State got the runs back in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits and two Ohio errors to take an 11-3 lead into the bottom of the inning. The Buckeyes added on in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on six hits, taking a 15-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth. 

Ohio continued to battle in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Yuhas and Keidel reached on back-to-back singles, both runners moved up a base on a ground out, setting up an RBI single from Hoffner to score Yuhas from third. After senior Maddie Wilcox (Grove City, Ohio) walked, Wilson lined out to left, scoring Keidel from third. The Buckeyes were able to record the final out of the game on a strikeout, securing the 15-5 win for Ohio State. 

Up next, the Bobcats head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. April 25-26 to take on Central Michigan in a three-game series.
