BLACKSBURG, VA – The Ohio baseball team (14-27, 9-15 MAC) lost both games (14-1, 14-2) in its doubleheader against Virginia Tech (30-14, 13-11 ACC) on Saturday, May 4.
GAME ONE: Virginia Tech 14, Ohio 1
Overall, Ohio scored one run on seven hits and committed one error. Virginia Tech scored 14 runs on 13 hits and without committing any errors.
Redshirt junior AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) led the Bobcats, going 2-for-3 at bat with one run. Senior Cole Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded Ohio's sole RBI and had one hit.
On the mound, junior Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) was given the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits, struck out four batters, and walked five in three innings pitched. Graduate student Tim Knapschaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) finished the game, allowing six runs on six hits, struck out four batters and walked one.
Virginia Tech got the scoring started in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs. Ohio's offense was held scoreless while the Hokies were continuing to add their lead, going up 14-0 after six innings.
Rausch opened the seventh with a single the center, advancing to third on the next bat to set himself up on scoring position. Williams singled up the middle to bring Rausch across home, giving the Bobcats their one run of the game.
The game ended in the seventh due to the mercy rule, Virginia Tech won 14-1.
GAME TWO: Virginia Tech 14, Ohio 2
The Bobcats scored two runs on seven hits with no errors, while Virginia Tech scored 14 runs on 13 hits with no errors.
The Bobcats were led offensively by senior Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.), recording both of Ohio's RBIs on two hits. Freshman JR Nelson (Vernon Hills, Ill.) went 3-for-4 at bat and scored one run.
Junior Hudson Boncal (Corona, Calif.) started for the Bobcats, allowing nine runs on nine hits, struck out four batters and walked three in three innings pitched. Junior Adam Beery (Ravenna, Ohio) allowed two runs on two hits and walked two batters in two innings pitched.
Virginia Tech took an early advantage, scoring six through the first two innings. Ohio cut into the lead in the top of the third. Antle took advantage of runners on all bases and doubled down the right line to bring two Bobcats racing across home plate, putting the score 6-2.
Virginia Tech went on to score eight more runs, ultimately winning in seven innings 14-2.
