Ohio Men’s Basketball Falls to Texas State in MBI Finale

CONWAY, S.C. – The Ohio men's basketball team (2-5) concluded the 2024 Myrtle Beach Invitational on Sunday night (Nov. 24), falling to Texas State (4-3), 74-65, inside the HTC Center. 
 
Overall, Ohio shot 37 percent from the field, 29 percent from three and were 19-of-25 from the line, while Texas State shot 46 percent from the field, 38 percent from three and were 13-of-18 from the line. Texas State outrebounded Ohio, 48-27, and scored 50 points in the paint compared to Ohio's 18. Ohio dished out 10 assists and had eight steals, while Texas State had 13 assists and six steals. 
 
Individually, senior forward AJ Clayton (Roseville, Ohio) led the Bobcats with 18 points and five rebounds, while junior forward Aidan Hadaway (Lafayette, Ga.) added 13 points, five rebounds and went 6-of-8 from the line. Junior guard Jackson Paveletzke (Kimberly, Wis.) added 12 points and four rebounds, with junior guard Elmore James (Cleveland, Ohio) scored 10 points and dished out three assists. 
 
Texas State won the tip and got on the board first with the first three points, however, free throws from James and a layup from Hadaway put Ohio up one. The two teams traded baskets before free throws and a layup from Paveletzke gave Ohio a two-point lead. However, Texas State then went on a 9-0 run to take a seven-point lead. Ohio was able to stop the run, with a three from Clayton cutting the Ohio deficit to four with 10:20 remaining in the half.
 
Clayton continued to be solid behind the arc, hitting back-to-back threes to tie the game at 23-23 going into the under-eight media timeout. Out of the timeout, the two teams traded baskets back-to-back baskets from Texas State out them up five with 4:33 remaining, forcing Ohio to burn a 30-second timeout. A layup from Paveletzke was able to cut the Ohio deficit to two, however, a driving layup from Texas State with 11 seconds to go gave them a 35-31 lead going into halftime. 
 
At the half, Ohio shot 37 percent from the field, 27 percent from three and were 7-of-11 from the line, while Texas State shot 45 percent from the field, 50 percent from three and were 3-of-5 from the line, Texas State outrebounded Ohio, 27-12 and dished out eight assists to Ohio's five. 
 
A basket from brown opened the second half for the Bobcats. After Texas State went up six, a three from Clayton, a free throw from Hadaway and rebound from James that set up a three from brown gave the Bobcats a 40-39 lead with 17:28 to go. After Texas State retook the lead, free throws from Hadaway put the Bobcats up one going into the first media timeout. 
 
After the two teams traded baskets, Texas State went on a 6-0 run to take a 51-45 lead with 11:48 to go in the game. After Texas State took an eight-point lead, a three from James cut the deficit to five. However, a driving layup from Texas State put them back up seven with 8:37 remaining in the game. Out of the timeout, a three from Hadaway cut the Texas State lead to four going into the under-eight media timeout. Out of the timeout, the two teams traded baskets, with Ohio unable to cut into the Texas State lead, sending the game to the final media timeout with Ohio trailing, 67-61. 
 
Out of the timeout, Texas State took an eight-point lead before free throws from Paveletzke cut the deficit to six with 1:58 to go. Ohio was unable to cut into the deficit anymore, falling, 74-65. 
 
For Texas State, Tylan Pope scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Christian Turner scored 13 points, with Tyrel Morgan grabbing 11 rebounds. 
 
Up next, the Bobcats return to Athens on Saturday, Nov. 30 to take on Robert Morris. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
