OXFORD, Ohio – The fourth-seeded Ohio field hockey team opened play at the 2023 Mid-American Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon (Nov. 3), falling to No. 1 Miami, 1-0 in a defensive battle in the conference semifinals at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.
Overall, Ohio registered three shots with none on goal, while Miami recorded one goal on 16 shots with 12 on goal.
Individually, junior
Noa Desmaretz (Antwerp, Belgium) sophomore
Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) and junior
Merle Kal (Haarlem, The Netherlands) all recorded shots for Ohio.
In goal, senior
Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) was solid, allowing one goal, while making 10 saves on 16 shots faced.
The first quarter saw little offensive action from either team, with both defenses stepping up, with Miami getting the first two shots of the game, however, a save from Lotze kept the match scoreless after the first 15 minutes of play.
Both offenses picked up in the second quarter, the Ohio getting a shot off from Desmaretz early in the quarter. Miami then picked up pressure, recording multiple shots, but were unable to get the ball past the Ohio defense. The remainder of the period saw both teams defenses again holding strong, sending the match to the half scoreless.
After third minute, Miami led with three shots to Ohio's one, while the RedHawks registered one shot on goal, while Lotze registered one save.
The third quarter saw both offenses pick up the pace early on. Ohio opened the quarter with the first attempt from Dikotla a minute into the quarter Miami countered early, forcing Lotze to make another save. Ohio went on to get the first penalty corner of the match in the 38
th minute, with Ohio getting a shot off that was blocked by the Miami defense, keeping the score knotted at 0-0. The RedHawks put the pressure on late in the quarter, registering four-straight shots, that that resulted in three-straight saves from loss, keeping Miami off the board. Miami went on to get its first corner of the match which resulted in a shot, but Ohio was able to keep the ball out of the game, sending the game to the fourth quarter still tied at 0-0.
Miami struck three minutes into the fourth quarter, scoring off a corner to take the 1-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining. After both teams continued to battle, Ohio pulled their keeper to put anther attacker on the field, however, the Ohio offense was unable to get the equalizer before the final buzzer, falling by the final of 1-0.
With the result of today's match, the Bobcats conclude the 2023 season.
