OXFORD, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (20-23, 16-18 MAC) returned to action on Wednesday (May 12), dropping a doubleheader to Miami (42-8, 32-2 MAC). The Bobcats dropped game one, 3-2, before falling 13-4 in five innings in game two.
GAME ONE: Miami 3, Ohio 2
Miami out-hit the Bobcats, 11-4, while Ohio committed one error to the RedHawks' two. Senior shortstop Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) led the way with two hits, one double, one RBI and one run scored. Senior outfielder Allie Englant (Long Beach Calif.) added a hit and a run score, while sophomore designated player Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) added a single and an RBI.
Miami struck in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats picked up their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Yun singled. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, heading to the bottom of the frame, trailing 1-0.
The RedHawks added on in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on another sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead after five.
Ohio struck in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Englant singled to left before scoring on an RBI double down the right field line from Yun, cutting the Miami lead to 2-1. However, the Bobcats weren't done. The next batter, Bernard, then roped a single to center, trying the game at 2-2 going to the bottom of the sixth inning.
However, the RedHawks retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homerun from freshman Holly Blaska. Ohio was unable to get the offense going on the top of the seventh, falling 3-2.
In the circle, junior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits, walked one and struck out three. For Miami, senior Courtney Vierstra pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter.
GAME TWO: Miami 13, Ohio 4
Miami out-hit the Bobcats 13-7, while both teams committed one error. Yun and freshman infielder Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) both recorded doubles and an RBI, while Bernard registered s single and an RBI. Junior infielder Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas), junior outfielder Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.), freshman outfielder Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) and senior catcher Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) all registered singles for Ohio.
Miami struck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run homerun from junior Allie Cummins. The RedHawks added on in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits to take an early 7-0 lead.
Ohio responded in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits and was capped by a two-RBI single from Bernard that cut the Ohio deficit to 7-3. However, Miami responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homerun from Blaska that gave the RedHawks a 9-3 lead.
The RedHawks added on in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits, taking a 13-3 lead. Ohio got a run in the top of the fifth inning when Yun doubled and scored on a double from Paoli, however, Ohio would fall 13-4 in five innings.
In the circle, senior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) got the start, pitching one inning while allowing five runs on five hits. Freshman Cassidy Zaker (Lancaster, Ohio) pitched two innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, while sophomore Holly Brehm (Mullen, W. Va.) pitched one inning, and did not allow a run on two hits. For Miami, senior Taylor Rathe pitched four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking one.

Ohio wraps up the 2021 season May 14-16 when the Bobcats head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a four-game series with Central Michigan.
