GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The Ohio softball team (0-5) wrapped up the three game series at East Carolina (8-2) on Sunday (February 28), falling to the Pirates, 7-0.
The Bobcats recorded five hits, with graduate student second baseman Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw, Ga.) leading the way with two singles, while senior short stop Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio), junior outfielder Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) and junior first baseman Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) all recorded base hits for Ohio.
Ohio threatened early in the top of the first inning, putting two runners on with one out after back-to-back singles from Vaughn and Yun. However, the ECU defense was able to work out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
East Carolina struck in the bottom of the second innings, scoring five runs on four hits to take an early 5-0 lead.
With the Pirates leading 6-0, the Bobcats presented their biggest threat to rally in the top of the sixth inning. After Fogue and Spacek led the inning off with back-to-back singles, senior catcher Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize and left the bases loaded. ECU added one more run in the bottom of the sixth and went on to record the shutout victory.
In the circle, sophomore pitcher Holly Brehm (Mullens, W. Va.) got the start, pitching one and two-thirds of an inning. She allowed five runs, one of which was earned, on five hits while walking one. Junior pitcher Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) entered the game in the second inning and pitched 4.1 innings, while allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks. She struck out two.
For East Carolina, the pitching trio of junior Kama Woodall, junior Whitney Sanford and junior Erin Poepping all combined to pitch the seven-inning shutout.
The Bobcats are back in action March 13-14 for four games at UNC Wilmington. Action begins at Noon ET on both days.
