Fogue's Two Grand Slams Lead Ohio Softball to Saturday Split at THE Spring Games

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. –  Led by two grand slams from sophomore Caitlin Fogue, the Ohio softball team (9-13) opened play at THE Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. on Saturday (March 7), splitting the day's games. The Bobcats downed St. Bonaventure (2-6), 9-5, on Fogue's walk-off grand slam, before falling to Iowa (17-5), 1-0, to close out the day.

GAME ONE: Ohio 9, St. Bonaventure 5
St. Bonaventure opened the top of the first inning, scoring four runs on four hits and sending the game to the bottom of the frame with Ohio trailing, 4-0. After a scoreless top of the second for the Bonnies, a one-out double from sophomore Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) put Ohio in business. However, the Bobcats were unable to get her home, sending the game to the third with Ohio trailing 4-0. 

Ohio struck in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) reached on an error, followed by a single from freshman Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) and a singled from junior Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) to load the bases. Then with two outs, Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) hit a grand slam to center, clearing the bases and tying the game at 4-4. 

Ohio attempted to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after a leadoff single from Troutman. However, the Bobcats were unable to get her home, sending the game to the sixth inning with it tied at 4-4. The Bobcats once again attempted to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after Fogue singled to lead off the inning, however Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the seventh with it tied at 4-4. 

SBU retook the lead in the top of the seventh inning on a leadoff homerun to give the Bonnies a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the frame. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats rallied. Senior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) put led the inning off with a single and then moved to second on a passed ball. Holland scored to tie the game on an RBI double from Troutman. Freshman Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) and junior Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Then, already with one grand slam to her name on the day, Fogue crushed her second one of the day to left field, clearing the bases and sending the Bobcats home with the walk-off 9-5 victory.  

Overall, Ohio scored nine runs on nine hits and did not commit an error, while St. Bonaventure scored four runs on six hits and committed one error. 

Ohio was led by Fogue who went 3-for-4 with two grand slams, eight RBI and one run scored, while Troutman went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI. Englant added a hit and a run scored, while Spacek doubled and Holland added a hit and a run scored. 

In the circle, redshirt sophomore Baylie Thornhill (Baton Rouge, La.) got the start, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking two and striking out one. Freshman Holly Brehm (Mullens, W. Va.) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit, walking one and striking out three. 

GAME TWO: Iowa 1, Ohio 0
Iowa struck first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on two hits. 

Ohio's first base runner came in the top of the third inning when Holland drew a walk. Then with two outs, Troutman singled to left. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with Iowa still leading, 1-0. 

After an uneventful fourth inning, Iowa threatened to add on in the bottom of the fifth inning, however, the Bobcats worked out of the jam, sending the game to the sixth inning still trailing, 1-0. Ohio threatened in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Troutman doubled but was thrown out at third. Moments later, Englant singled, but was unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the sixth with Iowa still leading, 1-0. 

After a scoreless bottom of the sixth for Iowa, Ohio came to the plate looking for the equalizer in the top of the seventh, however they were unable to get anything going, falling, 1-0. 

At the plate, Ohio was unable to score a run on three hits and did not commit and error, while Iowa scored one run on 10 hits and did not commit an error. 

Individually, Troutman recorded a double and a single, while Englant also registered a hit. 

In the circle, junior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) pitched six innings, allowing one run on 10 hits, walked two and struck out two.
