CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- The Ohio baseball team (6-6) was blanked by Nebraska Omaha (4-7), 4-0, in the Sunday (March 4) series finale of the four-game weekend set at Perfect Game's LakePoint facility.
The Bobcats split the series with the Mavericks. The Bobcats bounced back from a tough 6-5 loss to to the Mavericks in the series opener on Friday (March 2) by using solid pitching and timely hitting to sweep a Saturday (March 3) doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 5-2.
Ohio was unable to overcome a strong performance on the mound by Nebraska Omaha senior right-handed starting pitcher Payton Kinney, who threw a no-hitter. He struck out nine while going the distance. Kinney walked four, with Ohio redshirt senior designated hitter Michael Klein (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) drawing three of them.
The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman second baseman Max Gamm and junior left fielder Thomas DeBonville led off with back-to-back singles. One out later, Gamm scored on a base hit to center by sophomore shortstop Keil Krumwiede, then DeBonville scored on an error by the Bobcats.
Nebraska Omaha extended its lead to 3-0 in the third. Junior designated hitter Grant Suponchick drew a leadoff walk and scored one out later on an Ohio error.
The Mavericks added on a final insurance run in the fifth when Krumwiede singled to center and later scored when junior center fielder Tyler Daugherty lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
Freshman left-handed starting pitcher Alex Kuster (Lake Orion, Mich.), one of nine pitchers utilized by Ohio, took the loss on the mound. He allowed two runs -- one of which was earned -- on three hits and a walk.
Ohio will play its first true road series of the 2018 season next weekend (March 9-11) when it visits Baltimore for a three-game set against Towson.
