MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Junior Seth Streich tallied a pair of hits, but it was not enough as the Ohio University baseball team (1-3) was shutout Friday afternoon, falling 4-0 to Middle Tennessee State at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Streich (Ridgeway, Pa.) also took the loss for the Bobcats on the mound as he went 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs. He also struck out four and allowed just three earned runs.
Streich's two-hit game marked the third straight contest in which he has tallied a pair of hits. He currently leads the team with a .538 batting average. Freshman Jake Madson (Cincinnati, Ohio) also chipped in offensively for the Bobcats as he went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Blue Raiders took the lead in the third inning as Ryan Stephens came in to score following a balk by Streich. Stephens got on base by leading off the inning with a single.
MTSU added three more runs on four hits in the bottom half of the fourth, capitalizing on an error.
Ohio's best scoring chance came in the top half of the seventh, thanks to a leadoff double down the left field line by Madsen. Fellow freshman Ian Mezlak (Lorain, Ohio) came up two batters later and singled up the middle to advance Madsen to third, but Mezlak would be thrown out on the play. Freshman Cody Gaertner came up next and flied out to center to end the threat.
Ohio returns to action against Middle Tennessee on Saturday at 2 p.m. Senior Jason Moulton takes the hill against the Blue Raiders. Moulton worked 4.2 innings last weekend at UNC-Wilmington.
