MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Ohio University baseball team (1-4) was defeated 2-1 by Middle Tennessee State Saturday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Senior Brent Choban (Rittman, Ohio) suffered the loss for the Bobcats after he worked 6.0 innings, allowing just one earned run. Choban scattered seven hits and walked just one batter. MTSU's Johnathan Frebis picked up the win following a 6.0 innings, five hit, one earned run performance.
Freshman Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) drove in the Bobcats only run of the afternoon as he drilled his first career home run over the left field wall with two outs in the sixth inning. Wells' solo shot, cut Ohio's deficit to just one, but that was as close as the Bobcats would get for the remainder of the game.
Ohio threatened in the fifth as junior Ben Otto (Menomonie, Wis.) hit a leadoff double off the left field wall. He would later advance to third after senior Ethan Newton (Norfolk, Va.) grounded out to first, but the Bobcats were unable to get Otto across.
The Blue Raiders opened the scoring in the third inning thanks to an RBI single through the right side by Justin Guidry, which scored Ryan Ford from second. Ford got on base after he singled to center field. He would later move into scoring position after he stole second.
Middle Tennessee State added another run in the fourth inning as it plated one run despite not getting one hit. MTSU capitalized on two Ohio errors. The Bobcats finished the game with three errors.
Ohio senior Jason Moulton (Toledo, Ohio) will start Sunday afternoon against MTSU's Jonathan Sisco in the final game of the three-game series. Sunday's first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
