MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Ohio University baseball team (1-5) was defeated 4-1 in the series finale at Middle Tennessee State Sunday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr Field. MTSU's victory over Ohio clinched a three-game sweep over the Bobcats.
Senior pitcher Jason Moulton (Toledo, Ohio) suffered the loss as he went 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs, striking out three and walking no one.
MTSU starter Jonathan Sisco picked up the win after he struck out seven. He also allowed just one earned run and two hits over 6.0 innings of work.
Ohio opened the scoring in the first inning as senior co-captain Ethan Newton (Norfolk, Va.) came into score following a single through the right side by freshmen Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio). Madsen's first-inning single was the first of two hits for the Ohio newcomer. Newton got on base by drawing a leadoff walk.
The Bobcats would be held in check for the remainder of the game as they were only able to get two more hits for the remainder of the game.
MTSU tied the game in the bottom half of the second thanks to a solo home run by Trent Miller. The Blue Raiders went on to take the lead in the bottom half of the third as it plated two runs to take a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, MTSU added another run following an RBI sacrifice fly by Ryan Stephens which drove home Ethan Williams from third to make the count 4-1. Williams got base by collecting a leadoff double.
Ohio threatened in the seventh as Madsen got on third base with just one out, but the Bobcats were unable to drive the freshman home.
Ohio returns to action on Friday, March 2 as it takes on Davidson at 6 p.m. as part of the 2012 Davidson Tournament. The Bobcats will also faceoff against Presbyterian during the three-day tournament in Davidson, N.C.
