Philadelphia, Pa. - Goals from Louzeth Schutte and Cathryn Altdoerffer kept Ohio's unbeaten streak intact with a 2-0 victory over Temple on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats improve to 5-0 on the season with the victory.
"Once again, we played pretty well, " Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "Our defense was able to record another shutout so we’re pretty happy with that. We executed very well on corners today as both goals were scored off set pieces."
Ohio’s first scoring opportunity occurred in the 10th minute when Schutte put one wide of the cage. Later in the half, she had a try blocked that led to a penalty corner for the Bobcats. Jessica Jue stepped up to take the try and she sent the pass toward Laura Mastro. The junior then gave it off to Schutte who fired home her second goal of the season for a 1-0 Ohio lead.
The Bobcats had one more good scoring opportunity in the half when a try by Altdoerffer was saved at 25:40. Ohio took a 6-5 advantage in shots to the intermission as goalkeeper Jen McGill denied Temple’s Bridget Settles twice and Becca Keener after two blocked attempts in front.
“The first half was open and free,†Macmillan added. “In the second half we shut them down and allowed only two shots and one penalty corner. We did a very nice job of tightening things up defensively and applying pressure.â€
Holding a one-goal lead, Ohio came close to doubling its lead in the opening minutes of the second half when Taylor Brown hit the post with a try. McGill would then keep Ohio in the lead with back-to-back denials of Katie Briglia and Settles.
Schutte and Jessica Vaeth had attempts blocked by the Owl defense before Ohio finally found its second goal. At 55:05, it was another penalty corner that proved beneficial to the Bobcats Schutte found Altdoerffer on the right side of goal for a 2-0 lead. Ohio continued pressing the issue offensively as Altdoerffer, Schutte and Katherine Fenzel all had attempts in goal in a two-minute period.
Ohio finished with a 13-7 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. McGill closed with her third shutout of the 2011 season and five saves.
Ohio’s next contest is its fourth in this current five-game road swing. The Bobcats take on No. 10 American University on Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m. at the University of Maryland campus.
