Final Stats

ATHENS, Ohio-Ohio right fielder Adam Gecewich finished a double shy of the cycle as the Bobcats drilled visiting Marshall 15-5 Wednesday evening at Bob Wren Stadium.

Ohio improved to 4-22 overall, while Marshall dropped to 11-16.

Gecewich went 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while designated hitter Seth Streich and catcher Trace Voshell also had three hits and drove in three runs. First baseman Jerod Yakubik added three hits and three runs, something also accomplished by center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire.

Marshall designated hitter Victor Gomez knocked in three runs, while he and shortstop Kenny Soccoro (three hits) also scored twice.

Ohio reliever Michael Dillon (1-3) got his first win of the season, allowing just two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk in four and one-third innings.

Marshall starter Ryan Kiel (0-1) couldn’t get out of the first inning, allowing Ohio seven runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk to take the loss.

That Ohio first inning put the game out of reach as the first six batters reached base. Shortstop Wesley O’Neill led off the game with his first homer of the season, and then Eldemire knocked in Yakubik with a double to right center. Left fielder Robert Maddox III then plated Eldemire with a double down the right field line and later came home on Voshell’s single up the middle. After two strikeouts, Gecewich had the big hit with a monster three-run shot to center field, his second home run of the season.

After Gomez’s two-run shot in the top of the fourth, Ohio scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Third baseman Bryan Barnes laced a single to left, scoring Yakubik, who had singled earlier. Streich then bounced a two-run single through the right side, plating Barnes and Maddox, who also singled.

O’Neill lifted a sacrifice fly to right and Voshell singled to left to account for the two tallies in the fifth inning.

After a Marshall run in the sixth, Eldemire (single up the middle) and Voshell (double down the left field line) recorded RBIs in the seventh.

The two teams traded runs in the eighth, with Ohio’s coming on Streich’s line drive homer to left field, his third round-tripper of the season.

Gecewich recorded his first triple of the season in the fifth.

Ohio turned three double plays on defense, while Marshall failed to record one.

The Bobcats will be back in action Friday at 6 p.m. against Western Michigan for the first of a three-game series at Bob Wren Stadium. Friday’s promotions will be “Halloween in April” and East Green Day. All fans are encouraged to wear costumes, with costume contests scheduled throughout the night. Students living on Ohio University’s East Green are encouraged to represent their Green in Ohio Baseball’s “Battle of the Greens”.
