AMHERST, Mass. – The Ohio baseball team (9-36, 6-19 MAC) earned a 5-3 road win at UMass (14-24, 10-15 MAC), winning game one of the series on Friday, May 1.
The Bobcats scored five runs on seven hits with two errors. The Minutemen scored three runs on seven hits with two errors.
Six different Bobcats recorded a hit for Ohio. Junior
Cameron Boyd (Villa Hills, Ky.) led the team at the plate, finishing 2-for-5. Junior
Taylor Harris (Parrish, Fla.) finished 1-for-3 at the plate with one double. Junior
Tyler Stack (Oswego, Ill.) recorded a team-high two RBI's.
Freshman
Mason Gass (Oakdale, Pa.) started on the mound for Ohio. In 5.0 innings pitched, Gass allowed two runs on five hits. Senior
Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) replaced Gass on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings. Masters earned the win with two strikeouts, only allowing one run on one hit.
The Minutemen took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Senior
Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) tied the game at 1-1 for Ohio off an RBI single by graduate student
Colton Shirley (Anderson, Ind.).
The score remained tied at 1-1 through four innings of play. UMass took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth inning, senior
Reese Harmon (Columbus, Ind.) hit a home run to tie the game at 2-2.
Ohio took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Back-to-back singles by Boyd and fifth year
Will Henson (Chicago, Ill.) got two Bobcats on base. Bases were full after Shepherd reached first on an error. With bases full, Stack hit a two-run single allowing Boyd and Henson to score. At the end of the eighth, Ohio led UMass 4-2.
Boyd's RBI single in the top of the ninth extended Ohio's lead to 5-2. UMass scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, but Masters secured the 5-3 win over the Minutemen with one final strikeout.
The Bobcats will be back in action for game two at UMass on Saturday, May 2. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET and the game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
