PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – It's the first week of summer break, and that means it's MAC Championship time for two more Bobcat teams! Men's golf wraps up its championship run this week, while softball begins its quest for a championship! Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System.

MEN'S GOLF
May 3-5 / 2026 Mid-American Conference Championships / Zionsville, Ind. / Holiday Farms / 9 a.m. ET / Championship Central / Live Results 

The Ohio Men's Golf team is set for the 2026 MAC Men's Golf Championships, hosted by Central Michigan at The Club at Holliday Farms. Ohio will compete against eight fellow MAC programs in the three-day tournament, beginning with round one on Sunday (May 2) and concluding with the final round on Tuesday (May 5).
 
The 7,349-yard par-72 layout at Holliday Farms boasts a slope of 141 and a rating of 76.8. Ohio enters the championship following a strong spring season, highlighted by matchups against nationally ranked teams, top-10 individual golfers, and intense showdowns with MAC rivals.

Gray Lamont enters the MAC Championship after a strong spring season where he recorded two top-20's and was the low Bobcat four times throughout the 2025-26 season, highlighted by a T-4 finish at this year's Bentwater Intercollegiate.
 
Carson Trafford returns to the MAC Championship following g a strong season of play, highlighted by consecutive top 15 finishes at the fall's Carolina Cup and Purdue Fall Invitational.
 
Will Kates returns to the MAC Championship following another strong season, earning low Bobcat twice, including a T-14 finish at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate in September, his first of two top-20 finishes in the fall season.
 
Rylan Hall makes his MAC Championship debut as a true freshman. Hall's strong run of form at the end of the season included a T-18 finish at the Golfweek/Stifel spring challenge, where he was the low Bobcat at even par.
 
Jack O'Donnell closes out his senior season at the MAC Championships. O'Donnell appeared in eight tournaments for the Bobcats this season, recording two top-20 finishes.
 
Jack Flores also makes his MAC Championship debut as a true freshman, after a strong season highlighted by a T-48 finish at the Muirfield shootout.
 
SOFTBALL

With the conclusion of the 2026 regular season, the Ohio softball team (36-17, 17-10 MAC) has earned the No. 4 seed at the 2026 Mid-American Conference Tournament, May 6-9 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. With the No. 4 seed, the Bobcats will begin action on Wednesday, May 6, against No. 5 Central Michigan (24-22, 15-11 MAC) at Noon p.m. ET. All games will be streamed on ESPN+. 

With a win, the Bobcats would move into the winner's bracket and face off with No. 1 Akron on Thursday, May 7, at Noon ET. With a loss, Ohio would move to the loser's bracket and play the loser of game two on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. ET. 

Akron earned the top seed in this year's tournament as the regular season champions, with NIU earning the second seed. Both teams earned a first-round bye and will play on Thursday. Miami enters the year at the No. 3 seed, with Ohio at No. 4, CMU at No. 5 and Western Michigan rounding out the field at No. 6. 

The 2026 MAC Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m. ET, with the if necessary game to follow at 3:30 p.m. ET. 

Ohio is coming off a 2-1 week that saw Ohio take the first two games of the series at UMass, before falling in the series finale. Senior Belle Hummel led the Bobcats during the final weekend of the 2026 regular season in Ohio's three-game series at UMass. Overall, Hummel hit .400 with four hits, one double, one home run, scored four runs and drove in one. She had a .800 slugging percentage, drew three walks and had a .538 on-base percentage and a 1.338. On May 1 against UMass, Hummel became the Bobcats single season hits leader with her 79th hit of the season, a lead-off home run to give Ohio an early lead. Overall, she finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, RBI and one walk. In game two of the day, Hummel went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Hummel wrapped up the weekend with a double and a walk. 

CMU is 43-22 overall and 15-11 in MAC play and is coming off a series loss at Akron last weekend. Angela Petrovitch leads CMU with a .407 average, with 66 hits, four doubles, five triples and 18 RBI, while Jenna Kuzara adds a .373 average with 57 hits, 17 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 41 RBI. In the circle, Mackenzie Langan has a 4.37 ERA with 22 starts and 109 innings of work, with 55 walks and 106 strikeouts.

The Ohio baseball team (9-38, 6-21 MAC) is back in action for the final four games at Bob Wren Stadium this season. The week begins on Wednesday, May 6, when the Bobcats host Morehead State (24-23) for a mid-week matchup. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET at Bob Wren Stadium and can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats then wrap up the home slate May 8-10 when Ohio hosts Toledo (24-24, 18-9 MAC) for Senior Weekend. The series begins on Friday, May 8, at 6 p.m. ET, before picking back up on Saturday, May 9, at 2 p.m. ET. Ohio and Toledo conclude the series on Sunday, May 10 for Senior Day at 1 p.m. ET. All three games can be seen on ESPN+. 

In Ohio's 5-3 win at UMass on Friday, six different Bobcats recorded a hit for Ohio. Junior Cameron Boyd led the team at the plate, finishing 2-for-5. Junior Taylor Harris finished 1-for-3 at the plate with one double. Junior Tyler Stack recorded a team-high two RBI's.  Freshman Mason Gass started on the mound for Ohio. In 5.0 innings pitched, Gass allowed two runs on five hits. Senior Dillon Masters replaced Gass on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings. Masters earned the win with two strikeouts, only allowing one run on one hit.

Morehead State comes to Athens with a 24-23 overall record and is coming off a series loss at Little Rock last weekend. Aubrey Kearns leads Morehead with a .387 batting average, recording 72 hits, 11 doubles, 10 home runs and 52 RBI, while Ian McCubbin adds a .355 average with 54 hits, eight doubles, three triples, 12 home runs and 45 RBI. On the mound, Devin Costa has seen action in 23 games, allowing 21 earned runs in 42.1 innings, walking two and striking out 23. 

Toledo enters the week with a 24-24 overall record, an 18-9 mark in MAC play and is coming off a series sweep of Ball State last weekend. The Rockets will play Butler on Wednesday before heading to Athens. Charlie Scholvin is batting .371 with 66 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 43 RBI, while Troy Sudbrook has a .366 average with 67 hits, 28 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 62 RBI. On the mound, Nathan Leininger is 8-1 with a 2.71 ERA, allowing 22 earned runs, 31 walks and 68 strikeouts.

The Ohio track and field team heads to Akron, Ohio, for the 2026 Akron Last Chance Invitational, May 6-7 at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex on the campus of Akron, marking their final event before the 2026 MAC Championships. 

The Bobcats are coming off a strong showing at the 2026 Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus this past weekend. Some of Ohio's top performers were sophomore Mairin O'Brien in the women's 3000m steeplechase and junior Ellie Greenwell in the women's 800m. O'Brien took home second place in the steeplechase with a PR of 10:31.00. The sophomore's time is the second-fastest steeplechase time in program history. Greenwell placed fifth in the 800m with a PR of 2:08.53, the fourth-fastest outdoor time in program history. Greenwell also won the women's 1500m with a time of 4:25.59
 
Senior Leila Boussedra and graduate student Kelsi Harris were stellar in the women's 5,000 meters. Boussedra placed second with a personal-best time of 16:20.70, ranking fifth all-time for the outdoor 5000m in program history. Harris recorded the fourth-fastest outdoor time in program history, 16:23.18, and placed fourth overall.
