AMHERST, Mass. – The Ohio baseball team (9-37, 6-20 MAC) fell 9-3 at UMass (15-24, 11-15 MAC) on Saturday, May 2, tying the series at 1-1.
The Bobcats recorded three runs, six hits and one error. The Minutemen recorded nine runs, seven hits and one error.
Junior
Cameron Boyd (Villa Hills, Ky.) led Ohio at the plate with a team-high two hits and two RBI's. Senior
Cale Steinbaugh (Georgetown, Ill.) scored a team-high two runs. Five different Bobcats, including Boyd, recorded at least one hit.
Sophomore
Hunter Winston (Hinckley, Ohio) started on the mound for Ohio. In 3.0 innings pitched, he recorded two strikeouts while allowing five earned runs and one hit. Senior
Landon Price (Middle Point, Ohio) was Ohio's closer, pitching a team-high 4.0 innings. Price exited the mound with four strikeouts, allowing one run on four hits.
The Minutemen earned an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Ohio cut UMass's lead in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the third. After getting on base with a double, sophomore
Brady Alexander (Glenshaw, Pa.) scored off an RBI single by Boyd.
The Bobcats struggled on the mound in the bottom of the fourth, forcing a pitching change. The Minutemen took an 8-1 lead with six runs on two hits.
Boyd recorded his second RBI single of the day in the top of the fifth, with Steinbaugh scoring on the play. The Minutemen record one run as well, making their lead 9-2 at the end of the fifth.
The Bobcats scored what would be their final run of the game in the top of the seventh. After Alexander stole second, Steinbaugh capitalized on a UMass fielding error and scored his second run of the game.
The score held for two innings with UMass earning a 9-3 win over Ohio.
The Bobcats will be back in action for their series finale at UMass on Sunday, May 3.
