ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (8-36, 5-19 MAC) fell 5-2 in a close matchup against Marshall (20-24, 10-11 Sun Belt) on Wednesday, April 29 at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Ohio bullpen delivered seven innings of one-run baseball but unfortunately couldn't overcome an early deficit.
Ohio scored two runs on five hits with one error, while Marshall recorded five runs on six hits with no errors.
Junior catcher Tyler Stack (Oswego, Ill.) was among Ohio's leaders in the game when he tallied an RBI single in the second. Fifth year infielder Will Henson (Chicago, Ill.) was effective by reaching base twice with a hit and a walk and scoring a run. Senior infielder Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) was credited with Ohio's other RBI after being hit by a pitch as part of a performance that included one hit.
Senior lefty Landon Price (Middle Point, Ohio) got the start for Ohio, going two innings, allowing four runs on two hits with one strikeout. The Bobcat bullpen was nearly perfect against Marshal, allowing one run in eight combined innings of work. Junior righty Ethan Stewart (Langsville, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore lefty Aiden Cook (Penfield, N.Y.) each recorded two scoreless innings.
The Thundering Herd scored first, hitting a grand slam and putting four runs on the board before the Bobcats had a chance to hit.
After bouncing back on defense in the top of the second, Ohio responded in the bottom half when Stack drove in a run. Henson started the inning with a single and came around to score when Stack drove a single into right-center field.
Two walks and a double with one out in the third would load the bases for the Bobcats before Shepherd was hit by a pitch to bring home the team's second run. Ohio forced a pitching change with two outs in the inning but was unable to scratch across any more runs.
The game remained 4-2 through the middle innings as both pitching staffs were effective off the mound.
In the seventh, the Thundering Herd would finally get back in the scoring column with a single run to make it 5-2.
The Bobcats were unable to respond in the late innings of a close game and fell 5-2.
Up next, the Bobcats will hit the road for a MAC series at UMass. The first game of the series will start on Friday, May 1 at 3 p.m.
