Ohio Volleyball Falls at #12 Penn State on Saturday Night

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa – The Ohio volleyball team (4-3, 0-0 MAC) fell 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 9-25) at #12 Penn State (6-1, 0-0 B1G) on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Ohio finished with 29 kills, five aces, three blocks, 26 assists and 22 digs. Penn State finished with 38 kills, 11 aces, 9.5 blocks, 31 assists and 24 digs.

Sophomore Bailey Blair (Louisville, Ky.) led Ohio's offense with 11 kills and 11.5 points. Junior Darbi Ricketts (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Rose Mahin (Franklin, Ind.) recorded a team-high two aces each. Junior Bryn Janke (Westfield, Wis.) distributed a team-high 11 assists while sophomore Lillie Meinhart (Lascassas, Tenn.) and freshman Rowan Kelly (Akron, Ohio) combined for 12 assists. Senior Gentry Brown (Shadyside, Ohio) led the team in digs with five total. Brown and senior Emily Waddell (Carmel, Ind.) recorded a team-high two blocks each.

The Nittany Lions took an early 1-0 lead after winning the first set, 25-21. Penn State got off to a quick start, taking an 8-3 lead over Ohio. The Bobcats did not relent and kept the pressure on Penn State. After a surge of offensive success, including two aces by junior Darbi Ricketts (Cincinnati, Ohio), Ohio took its first lead of the set 14-13. The teams continued to trade points thorough the remainder of the set. Penn State secured the 25-21 win with three-straight points at the end of the set.

It was a competitive second set for the Bobcats. Almost halfway through, Ohio trailed Penn State 13-11. A brief scoring run extended Penn State's lead over Ohio. The Bobcats fought back once again, eventually cutting the Nittany Lions' lead to 22-21. A kill by Blair tied the game at 23-23. Despite Ohio's effort, Penn State went on to win the second set 25-23. Heading into the third set, Ohio trailed Penn State 2-0.

Ohio eventually fell 25-9 in the third and final set, dropping the match to Penn State 3-0.

The Bobcats will be back in action with a neutral site game against #4 Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 13. First serve is set for 1 p.m. ET.
