Ohio Men’s Basketball's Winning Streak Snapped at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ohio men's basketball team (10-8, 4-2 MAC) returned to action Tuesday night (Jan. 13) against Toledo (10-7. 4-1 MAC), and despite a strong shooting first half, the Bobcats were unable to overcome the Rockets in the second, falling 101-85 inside Savage Arena, snapping their five-game winning streak. 

Overall, Ohio shot 50 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three and were 12-of-19 from the field, while Toledo shot 61.9 percent from the field, 41.2 percent from three and were 16-of-17 from the line. Toledo outrebounded Ohio, 34-26 and dished out 22 assists to Ohio's 11. 

Overall, the Bobcats were led by redshirt junior forward Javan Simmons (Columbus, Ohio) with 21 points and six rebounds, going 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-9 from the line. Senior guard Jackson Paveletzke (Kimberly, Wis.) added 20 points and six assists, while going 8-of-17 from the field. Senior forward Aidan Hadaway (Lafayette, Ga.) finished the game with 16 points and four boards, while redshirt freshman Jesse Burris (Delaware, Ohio) added 10 points off the bench. 

The Bobcats opened the game with the first basket as senior guard Ajay Sheldon (Dublin, Ohio) drained a three on the first possession. After Toledo got on the board, back-to-back jumpers from Paveletzke increased the early Ohio lead. Toledo would cut the Ohio lead to two, however, layups from Simmons and another three from Sheldon put the Bobcats up 17-7 headed into the first media timeout. Out of the break, a dunk from Simmons and a three from redshirt freshman forward Kiir Kuany (Melbourne, Australia) put Ohio up 22-9, however, the two teams started trading baskets before a 4-0 run from Toledo cut the Ohio lead to 26-18 with 11:55 to go. 

Out of the break, a three from Burris stopped the Toledo run, however the Rockets would match it with a 7-3 run to cut the Bobcats lead to 32-25. Toledo continued to chip away at the Ohio lead, cutting the Bobcats' lead to three headed into the under-eight media timeout. Out of the break, a three from Hadaway helped stop the Toledo run, however, a layup from the Rockets brought the score to 38-35 headed into the final break of the first half.
 
After Toledo tied the game at 40-40 before a jumper from Paveletzke put Ohio back in the lead. The two teams traded baskets before a 7-0 run from Toledo gave the Rockets a five-point lead. However, a three at the buzzer from Paveletzke stopped the run and cut the Ohio deficit to two, sending the game into halftime with the Bobcats trailing, 52-50. 

At the break, Ohio shot 60.6 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from three, while Toledo shot 60 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three. Toledo outrebounded the Bobcats, 18-13, while both teams dished out nine assists. 

Toledo opened the second half on a 4-0 run, forcing Ohio to burn a timeout with 18:42 left. Out of the break, freshman guard JJ Kelly (Chambersburg, Pa.) stopped the Toledo run, however the Rockets hit three-straight threes to take an 11-point lead with 15:58 remaining in the game. The Rockets would go on to take a 15-point lead, however, a jumper from Paveletke stopped the run, sending the game to the under-12 media timeout with the Bobcats trailing, 73-60. Out of the break, the two teams traded baskets before a layup from Simmons and a jumper from Hadaway cut the Ohio deficit to 13 with five minutes to go. The Bobcats tried to chip away over the remaining minutes, however, they would be unable to make up the difference, falling to the Rockets, 101-85. 

Up next, the Bobcats are back on the road on Friday, Jan. 16 when they head to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. ET inside Worthen Arena and can be seen nationally on CBS Sports Network.
