PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio volleyball returns to Athens after a month away, while Ohio field hockey is set to honor its seniors this Sunday. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System.

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (3-2,1-0 MAC) continues Mid-American Conference play this weekend when they head to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State (1-3, 0-0 MAC). Kickoff is set for Noon ET inside Scheumann Stadium and can be seen on CBS Sports Network.The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield, presented by Holzer Health System. Veteran Ohio radio personality Marty Bannister is reprising his role as Ohio's play-by-play broadcaster. Bannister will be joined by color analyst Rob Cornelius, who has been a part of the broadcasts for more than two decades. 

The Bobcats and the Cardinals first met in 1975 and have a series record of 13-15. The two teams closed the 2024 season at Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium; the solid 42-21 victory punched Ohio's ticket to the 2024 MAC Championship. Additionally, wide receiver Coleman Owen became the third Bobcat in program history to tally 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.
 
Ohio is coming off a 35-20 win over Bowling Green to open MAC play on Saturday. Graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro led another high-scoring effort for the Bobcats with two passing touchdowns and 208 passing yards. He also contributed two rushing touchdowns and 66 rushing yards. Navarro's top target against the Falcons was redshirt sophomore tight end Mason Williams, who set career highs in receptions (8) and yards (93) while also catching a touchdown. Ohio's other receiving touchdown went to junior wide receiver Chase Hendricks, who contributed one catch for 25 yards. In the run game, Ohio was led by redshirt senior running back Sieh Bangura, who had 115 rush yards.  

The Ohio defense forced four turnovers in the game, two of which were forced by graduate student linebacker Cameron Hollobaugh. In the first half, Hollobaugh started the game with a pick-six before forcing a fumble to start the second half. Also involved in the turnovers was redshirt sophomore defensive end Jay Crable, who recorded a pressure on the interception and a recovery on the fumble. Crable's incredible game also included a program-record tying three sacks. Leading Ohio in tackles was again redshirt junior linebacker Michael Molnar with 10. To end the game, redshirt sophomore cornerback DJ Walker hauled in an interception to end Bowling Green's hopes at a comeback.  

Ball State is 1-3 overall and Saturday's game will be their MAC opener. Ball State is coming off a bye week and last played on Sept. 20, falling to UConn, 31-25. 

MEN'S GOLF
Sept. 28-30 / at 2025 Carolina Cup / Spartanburg, S.C.  Carolina Country Club / All Day / Live Results 

The Ohio men's golf team returns to action Sept. 28-30 at the 2025 Carolina Cup. the three-day event is hosted by USC Upstate at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. The tournament begins on Sunday, Sept. 28 with 18 holes, followed by 18 on Monday, Sept. 29, before concluding the tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 30 with the final 18 holes. 

Teams competing at this year's event are; Tennessee Tech., Radford, Ohio, Charleston Southern, North Carolina A&T, Samford, Wofford and USC Upstate. 

Competing for Ohio at this years event are seniors Will Kates, Nathaniel Gray Lamont, Carson Trafford and Jack O'Donnell and freshman Rylan Hall

Ohio opened the 2025-26 season with two events during their opening week, placing third at the 2025 Joe Feaganes Invitational and placing eighth at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate. At the Joe Feaganes Invitational, senior Nathaniel Gray Lamont and freshman Jack Flores led the way for the Bobcats, each posting scores of 210 (-3) after three rounds of play in Huntington to tie for 12th overall. Then at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate, The Bobcats were led by senior Will Kates. Kates opened the weekend up with a 70, before wrapping up round two with a 73. Kates then returned to action on Sunday and finished the day with a 75, giving him a two-day total of 218 (+5), helping him placed tied for 14th overall. 

SOCCER

The Ohio soccer team (3-5-4, 1-1-3 MAC) is back in Athens this week for one MAC contest. Ohio is set to take on Ball State (4-4-2, 1-2-1 MAC) on Thursday, Oct. 2. First touch is set for 4 p.m. ET at Chessa Field and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ball State is currently 4-4-2 overall with a 1-2-1 mark in conference play. Ball State is coming off a bye week, last competing on Sept. 25 when they fell to Buffalo, 2-1, on the road. 

Ohio is coming off a 0-1-1 week where they fell on the road at Western Michigan, before taking on Eastern Michigan on Sunday in a match that resulted in a 1-1 draw. Sophomore Iro Fakinou capitalized on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to tie the match up at 1-1 late in the contest. 

CROSS COUNTRY
Oct. 3 / at Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational / South Bend, Ind. / Burke Golf and Cross Country Course / 10:30 a.m. ET / Live Results / Meet Information 

The Ohio men's and women's cross country teams returns to action on Friday, Oct. 3 for the 2025 Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. The event is hosted by Notre Dame at the Burke Golf and Cross Country Course in South Bend, Ind. The event is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. 

The Bobcats are coming off a successful trip to the George Dales Invitational on Sept. 19. The women's team placed first overall with senior Allie Martin winning the women's 6k with a time of 21:02.4. THe Ohio men's team placed second overall at the event with junior Andrew Bracken leading Ohio in the men's 8k, placing fourth with a time of 24:48.8.

The Ohio volleyball team (2-12, 0-2 MAC) returns to Athens for the first time since August this weekend for two MAC matchups in the Convo. The weekend begins on Friday, Oct. 3 when Ohio hosts Akron (7-6, 0-2 MAC). First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio is back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 4 when Buffalo (3-8, 0-2 MAC) comes to Athens for a 4 p.m. ET matchup with the Bobcats. The game can also be seen on ESPN+. 

Akron comes to Ohio with a 7-6 overall record and an 0-2 mark in MAC play. Akron is coming off home losses to Miami and Ball State this past weekend in Akron. Buffalo is currently 3-8 overall with an 0-2 mark in MAC play after falling in back-to-back sweeps at the hands of Miami and Ball State in Buffalo last weekend. 

Ohio is looking to get back on track after falling in four sets to both Bowling Green and Toledo on the road last weekend. Against BGSU, Ohio finished with 45 kills, 12 aces, three blocks, 44 assists and 49 digs. The Falcons finished with 47 kills, five aces, 13 blocks, 40 assists and 56 digs. Then against the Rockets, Ohio finished with 45 kills, five aces, seven blocks, 43 assists and 67 digs. Toledo finished with 46 kills, nine aces, nine blocks, 41 assists and 73 digs.

The Ohio field hockey team (2-8, 1-2 MAC) is back in Athens for two games this weekend starting on Friday, Oct. 3 when Ohio hosts Bellarmine (1-8, 1-2 MAC). First touch is set for 1 p.m. ET at Pruitt Field. The weekend concludes for Ohio on Sunday, Oct. 5 when the Bobcats take on Queens (1-7). Game time is set for 1 p.m. ET at Pruitt Field. Both games can be seen on ESPN+. Sunday will also be Senior Day for the Bobcats with a ceremony set for prior to first touch. 

Bellarmine and Queens will play each other in a neutral site game at Pruitt Field on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. ET. That game will not be streamed. 

Bellarmine comes to Ohio with a 1-8 overall record and a 1-2 mark in MAC play. the Knights are coming off a 2-1 victory at Longwood on Sunday, giving Bellarmine their first win of the season. Queens is currently 1-7 overall after defeating Coker University on Sunday for their first win of the season. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 week last where where the Bobcats defeated 11th-ranked UMass, 1-0, in the Bobcats home openers. Senior Anouk Plaehn scored the Bobcats lone goal, while sophomore Ash Stephenson earned her first career shutout, recording three saves on the day. The Bobcats then were back on the road, falling to Central Michigan in overtime on Sunday. Four different Bobcats scored, while senior Sasha Dikotla recorded a goal and an assist. 

SWIM AND DIVE
Oct. 4 / Green and White Scrimmage / Athens, Ohio / Aquatic Center / 10 a.m. ET 

The Ohio swim and dive team dives into the pool for their annual Green and White scrimmage in Saturday, Oct. 4. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET at the Ohio University Aquatics Center. The event is free to attend. 

The annual Green and White Scrimmage will be Ohio's lone tuneup before the regular season begins on Oct. 24-25 for a tri-meet against Marshall and Buffalo. 

SOFTBALL
Oct. 5 / vs. Marshall / Athens, Ohio  Ohio Softball Field / 12 & 2 p.m. ET

The Ohio softball team is back in action for two more fall games on Sunday, Oct. 5 when the Bobcats host Marshall. The doubleheader is set to start at Noon ET at the Ohio Softball Field. Admission is free for all fans.
