PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio football opens Mid-American Conference play in Athens, while Ohio field hockey finally opens its home slate on their new turf. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System.

The Ohio football team (2-2,0-0 MAC) opens Mid-American Conference play in Athens on Saturday, Sept. 27 when Ohio hosts Bowling Green (2-2, 0-0 MAC). Kickoff is set for Noon ET on Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium and can be seen on CBS Sports Network. The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield, presented by Holzer Health System. Veteran Ohio radio personality Marty Bannister is reprising his role as Ohio's play-by-play broadcaster. Bannister will be joined by color analyst Rob Cornelius, who has been a part of the broadcasts for more than two decades. 

The Bobcats and the Falcons have met 75 times since 1945, posting a 32-41-2 record. Ohio last met Bowling Green in 2023; the Bobcats' dominant 38-7 victory marked their first MAC victory of the season and was highlighted by linebacker Keye Thompson's 71-yard fumble recovery. 

Ohio is coming off a 52-35 win over Gardner-Webb in Athens on Sept. 20. Multiple players for Ohio had record-breaking offensive performances, including a career day from junior wide receiver Chase Hendricks. On eight total catches, Hendricks recorded a career high 144 receiving yards and one touchdown. Throwing the ball to Hendricks was graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro, who recorded a career high of 290 passing yards and one passing touchdown. Navarro's other top options included redshirt freshman wide receiver Dom Dorwart, who hauled in his first career reception on a day where he recorded 51 total receiving yards. In the run game, Ohio's two backs each had multiple rushing touchdowns, with redshirt senior running back Sieh Bangura recording three touchdowns and 123 yards, and sophomore running back Duncan Brune recording three touchdowns and 88 rushing yards. 

Bowling Green is currently 2-2 overall and is coming off a 40-17 loss at Louisville on Saturday. Quarterback Drew Pyne went 12-22 with 131 yards and one touchdown. Jacob Harris added four receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown, while Lucian Anderson III added four carries, 79 yards and one touchdown.

The Ohio soccer team (3-4-2, 1-0-2 MAC) is back on the road for two MAC matchups in the state of Michigan this week starting on Thursday, Sept. 25 when the Bobcats head to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan (5-2-1, 1-0-1 MAC). First touch is set for 4 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 28 when they take on Eastern Michigan (4-4-0, 2-0-0 MAC) in Ypsilanti, Mich. First touch is set for 1 p.m. ET at Scicluna Field and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Western Michigan is currently 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 early in MAC play and are coming off a week where the Broncos defeated Miami on the road, before tying Bowling Green, 1-1, on Saturday on the road. Eastern Michigan is currently 4-4-0 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in MAC play. The Eagles are coming off a 2-0 week that saw EMU defeat Buffalo and Toledo. The Eagles will face off with Miami on Thursday before hosting the Bobcats. 

Ohio is coming off a 0-0-2 week that saw 1-1 draws with both Bowling Green and Akron at home to open MAC play. For the Bobcats, sophomore Iro Fakinou and junior Anna Burchett scored Ohio's goals this past week.

The Ohio volleyball team (2-10, 0-0 MAC) opens Mid-American Conference play this week on the road. The week begins on Thursday, Sept. 25 when Ohio takes on Bowling Green (6-6, 0-0 MAC) on the road. First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET inside the Stroh Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then heads down to roead to Toeldo, Ohio on Friday, Sept. 26 to take on Toledo (9-3, 0-0 MAC). First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET inside Savage Arena and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Bowling Green is 6-6 overall and is coming off a 1-1 weekend at the Kathy DeBoer Invitational, defeating Binghamton and falling to Michigan State. Toledo is 9-3 overall and is coming off a three-win weekend at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational, defeating Bellarmine, Mercyhurst and Purdue Fort Wayne.  

Ohio is looking to get back on track after battling last weekend at the Charlotte Invitational.

The Ohio field hockey team (1-7, 0-1 MAC) finally returns to Athens for the first time in 2025 this week. Ohio welcomes new MAC member No. 12 UMass (8-0, 1-0 MAC) to Athens on Friday, Sept. 26. First touch is set for 3 p.m. ET at Pruitt Field, paying for the first time on new turf that was installed this summer. The game can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then is back on the road on Sunday, Sept. 29 when they head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Central Michigan (4-3, 0-1 MAC). First touch is set for 12 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+. 

12th-ranked UMass is currently 8-0 overall with a 1-0 mark in MAC play and are coming off wins against Kent State and UAlbany this week. Central Michigan is currently 4-3 overall and 0-1 in MAC play after falling to James Madison on Friday. CMU will take on Ball State in Muncie, Ind. on Friday before hosting the Bobcats. 

Ohio is coming off another two-game road trip, this time in North Carolina where they battled App and and Davidson in close contests. Freshman Katie Cole scored two goals at Davidson on Sunday, while senior Anouk Plaehn added her first goal of the season against App State on Friday. 

MEN'S GOLF

The Ohio men's golf team returns to action Sept. 28-30 at the 2025 Carolina Cup. the three-day event is hosted by USC Upstate at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. The tournament begins on Sunday, Sept. 28 with 18 holes, followed by 18 on Monday, Sept. 29, before concluding the tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 30 with the final 18 holes. 

Teams competing at this year's event are; Tennessee Tech., Radford, Ohio, Charleston Southern, North Carolina A&T, Samford, Wofford and USC Upstate. 

Ohio opened the 2025-26 season with two events during their opening week, placing third at the 2025 Joe Feaganes Invitational and placing eighth at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate. At the Joe Feaganes Invitational, senior Nathaniel Gray Lamont and freshman Jack Flores led the way for the Bobcats, each posting scores of 210 (-3) after three rounds of play in Huntington to tie for 12th overall. Then at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate, The Bobcats were led by senior Will Kates. Kates opened the weekend up with a 70, before wrapping up round two with a 73. Kates then returned to action on Sunday and finished the day with a 75, giving him a two-day total of 218 (+5), helping him placed tied for 14th overall.
