DEKALB, Ill – The Ohio baseball team (8-21, 4-10 MAC) defeated Northern Illinois (11-17, 2-8 MAC) 17-16 in twelve innings on Saturday, April 5.
Ohio finished with 17 runs, 16 hits and three errors. Northern Illinois finished with 16 runs, 19 hits and two errors.
Sophomore Ben Slanker Canfield, Ohio) went 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, four total runs and seven RBI. Freshman Matt Ineich (South Lyon, Mich.) went 2-for-7 at the plate, along with two runs and one RBI. Sophomore Pauly Mancino (Westlake, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Cam Bryant (Miamisburg, Ohio) each went 3-for-5 at the plate and combined for six runs.
Senior Hudson Boncal (Corona, Calif.) started on the mound for Ohio and pitched 5.2 innings. Boncal threw two strikeouts, allowed 11 hits and seven runs on 28 at bats. Four other pitchers entered the game, and sophomore Trey Barkman (Kidron, Ohio) was given the win. Barkman recorded three strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. Freshman Julian Robertson (Aurora, Ontario) pitched most of the bottom of the 12th inning and earned his first career save.
After two scoreless innings, the Bobcats' offense came alive in the top of the third. Bryant led off with a single and stole second. A walk and another single loaded the bases, and Slanker capitalized, launching a grand slam over the right-field fence to give Ohio a 4–0 lead.
The Bobcats' momentum carried into the fourth, where they tacked on three runs on five hits. Ohio loaded the bases, and Ineich delivered an RBI single to extend the lead, 5–0. Slanker followed with his fifth RBI of the game, and Mancino added a run for the 7-0 advantage.
The Huskies got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, setting the score at 7-1. Northern Illinois scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to set the score at 7-5.
Bryant capitalized on being hit by a pitch, stealing home in the top of the sixth to extend the Ohio lead, 8-5. Northern Illinois answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs. As the offensive battle continued, Ohio hit a home run in the seventh, then Northern Illinois hit three to take an 11-9 lead after seven.
Sophomore Trae Cassidy (Northville, Mich.) hit a two-RBI double in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 11. With the game in extra innings, Slanker hit his second home run of the afternoon, giving the Bobcats a 13-11 lead in the tenth inning.
After Northern Illinois scored two runs to extend the game, Ohio scored four runs on three hits in the top of the 12th to take a 17-13 lead. The Huskies responded with a three-run home run, but it was not enough as the Bobcats held on to the victory, 17-16.
The Bobcats will conclude its series at Northern Illinois on Sunday, April 5. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
