PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – It's the last week of classes Bobcats! Ohio men's and women's basketball are back in the Convo this week, while swim and dive and wrestling are on the road for major invitationals and track and field kicks off the outdoor season. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System. 

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio men's basketball team (1-6) is back in Athens this week for two home matchups. The week begins on Wednesday, Dec. 3 when the Bobcats host Maine (0-9). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio returns to the Convo on Saturday, Dec. 6 when Marshall (5-2) comes to town. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+. Marty Bannister, Rob Cornelius and Gabe Genovesi will have the call for both of those matchups. 

The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield, presented by Holzer Health System. Jason Toy begins his second season on the mic for the Bobcats, while Dave Cecutti joins him in his first season on the airwaves. WXTQ (Power 105) in Athens returns as the 11-station net- work's flagship and can be heard on the Varsity Network App

Ohio is 1-6 overall after dropping two games at the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, Fla. last week, falling to George Mason and LMU. Senior forward Aidan Hadaway led the Bobcats, averaging 14.0 points and 5.0 rebounds a game, while going 5-of-12 from three and 5-of-7 from the line. 

Maine is 0-9 to start the season and is coming off losses to American, Longwood and Siena at the American MTE Nov. 28-30. Maine is led by TJ Biel with 12.7 points a game, while shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three, while adding 5.0 rebounds a game. This is the first ever meeting between Ohio and Maine. 

Marshall is currently 5-2 overall and is coming off a loss against Lipscomb on Nov. 26 in Huntington. The Herd will take on UNCW in Wilmington, N.C. on Dec. 3 before heading to Athens on Saturday. The Herd is led by Wyatt Fricks with 15.0 points a game, while shooting 54.2 percent from the field, 42.4 percent from three and 81.3 percent from the line, while averaging 5.0 rebounds a game. This is the 109th meeting between Ohio and Marshall, with the Bobcats leading the all-time series 57-52. Marshall has won the last three meetings between the two teams and the last four out of five matchups. 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio women's basketball team (3-3) is back in Athens for one game this week on Friday, Dec. 5 when the Bobcats host UIC (4-4). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 week that saw the Bobcats defeat Wright State on Athens on Monday before falling on the road to Davidson on Sunday. Junior guard Bailey Tabeling helped lead the Ohio women's basketball team to a 1-1 week this past week. Overall, Tabeling averaged 13.5 points and four rebounds, while shooting .500 from the field and going 6-of-13 from three. She also went 5-of-6 from the line, while recording four steals and dishing out two assists. In the Bobcats 80-66 victory over Wright State on Nov. 24, Tabeling scored a game-high 19 points, going 5-of-9 from the field, 4-of-8 from three and 5-of-6 from the line, she also added six rebounds, one assist and two steals. 

UIC is 4-4 overall and is coming off a 1-1 week at the 2025 Iona Turkey Tip-Off where they defeated Maine before falling to Iona on Nov. 29. UIC is led by Jessica Carrothers who averages 17.2 points a game, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line. 

SWIM AND DIVE

Four members of the Ohio swim team head to Austin, Texas Dec. 3-6 for the 2025 Toyota US Open. The four-day event is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET each day inside the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. 

Heading to Austin is sophomore Juliana Slaninka who will participate in the 200 back, junior Zita Szoke in the 100 and 200 freestyle, senior Casadie DiBetta in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and sophomore Jordan Claypoole in the 50 fly. 

At last year's event, Szoke placed sixth in the 50 free, fifth in the 200 free and third in the 100 free, while DiBetta finished third in the third in the 100 breaststroke. 

The Bobcats are coming off a first-place finish at the 2025 TYR' 85 Invite Nov. 21-23. The Bobcats concluded the three-day event with 2,768 total points, enough to hold off host Liberty, and claim first place at this year's event. Liberty finished second with 2,410 points, followed by Campbell in third with 1,427.5 points. Szoke was then named MAC Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season for her efforts at the event. Szoke placed first in all of her individual events over the weekend, including breaking a school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.48 in the preliminary round. Overall, Szoke claimed five first-place finishes over the weekend with two second-place finishes, helping the Bobcats to a first-place victory at the TYR 85' Invite.

WRESTLING
Dec. 5-6 / at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational / Las Vegas, Nev. / Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino / 12 p.m. ET / FloWrestling / Watch ($) / Event Information 

Ohio wrestling is back in action Dec. 5-6 when they head to Las Vegas, Nev. for th 2025 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The two-day event is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino. The event can be streamed on FloWrestling. 

At least year's event, redshirt senior Garrett Thompson placed third overall in the 174-pound bracket. 

Ohio is coming off a trip to the Mountaineer Invitational Nov. 23 in Boone, N.C. at App State. 
Leading the way for the Bobcats was redshirt sophomore Derek Raike, who took home the title in the 157 lb. bracket. Raike began his day by defeating UT-Chattanooga's Alex Hutchcraft by first period forfeit. Raike moved through the quarterfinals with a 9-3 decision victory over NC State's Latrell Shaffer, recording two takedowns in the match. Raike took home another victory by decision in the semifinals, recording three takedowns on his way to a 11-5 defeat of Appalachian State's Kai O'Dell. Raike dominated the championship match, recording five takedowns to defeat Appalachian State's Jeremiah Price by major decision, 17-6. Raike was named the MAC West Wrestler of the Week for his efforts.  

OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Dec. 5 / at GVSU Holiday Open / Allendale, Mich. / Kelly Family Sports Center / 12 p.m. ET / FloTrack / Watch ($) / Live Results /  Meet Information 

The Ohio track and field team opens the 205-26 season on Friday, Dec. 5 when they head to Allendale, Mich. to take part in the 2025 GVSU Holiday Open. The event will begin at 12 p.m. ET at the Kelly Family Sports Center on the campus of Grand Valley State University. The meet will be streamed on FlorTrack. 

The Bobcats finished eighth at last year's MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Junior Ellie Greenwell placed fourth in the 800m finals with a time of 2:11.11. Seniors Allie Martin and Leila Boussedra earned their second podium finishes of the meet in the women's 3000 meters. Martin placed fifth (9:43.35) and Boussedra placed seventh (9:44.58). Graduate student Kelsi Harris and senior  Alyssa Mason also competed in the event. Harris finished ninth (9:48.00) and Mason finished 12th (9:57.32). Martin also placed third in the 5,000m event, finishing with a time of 16:43.11.
