GROVE CITY, Ohio – The Ohio Women's Golf team, alongside nine conference competitors, will begin the 2024 Women's Golf Mid-American Conference Championships Sunday morning. The three-day tournament, which takes place at Pinnacle Golf Club will start at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday (Apr. 21) and will wrap up Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 23).
The course is a 72-par set up ranging 6,201 yards. For the tournament's layout, the front and back nines have been flipped so that the typical ninth hole is now the 18th and the tenth is the first hole. The course is filled with elevation changes, tall sycamore trees, and multiple lakes across the layout to pose both beauty and challenges to the competitors.
Ohio enters the tournament coming off of the team's best finish of the season. At the Lady Jaguar Invitational, the Bobcats placed in a tie for second, just one stroke behind the tournament winners and fellow MAC competitors, Ball State.
Ohio's Lineup & Tee Time:
-
Sophomore Mackenzie McRee (Tucson, Ariz.)
-
Freshman Zoe Luebbers (Cincinnati, Ohio)
-
Freshman Morgan Rodgers (Centerville, Ohio)
-
Junior Sydney Longstreth (Carmel, Ind.)
-
Senior Mariana Vega-Rivera (Reynoldsburg, Ohio)
Substitute:
Junior Sloane Post (Centennial, Colo.)
Vega-Rivera will open the day for Ohio at 10:20 a.m. with the following Bobcats teeing off in ten minute increments behind her.
The Bobcat Golfers
McRee has overcome significant adversity during her sophomore campaign, facing a wrist injury while competing at the Jennifer Duke Invitational in September. She would be forced to miss the next three tournaments, before returning at the UNCG Advance Golf Partners Collegiate in February. At the tournament, McRee placed 32nd in a field of challenging opponents, but her return has been highlighted by even stronger play. Most recently, McRee placed in a season-best tie for sixth at the Lady Jaguar Invitational. Her strong play in the return from injury has cemented McRee with a spot in the lineup for the conference championships.
Luebbers has leaped into the lineup in her first year in Athens. At the Jennifer Duke Invitational, Luebbers placed in seventh with a total score of five-over-par. The freshman has remained consistent in each of her appearances, capping off the regular season tied for third at the Lady Jaguar. Luebbers was the Bobcats' best finisher and the finish marked her career best. She will look to continue the momentum at the championships.
Alongside Luebbers, Rodgers enters the conference tournament lineup in her freshman season. The freshman has been the epitome of consistency for the Bobcats, leading the team in five of the five tournaments this season. Her five top-25 finishes are also the best on the team, featured by her season-best ninth place finish at the Rocket Classic. Rodgers will look to wrap up her freshman season with a strong performance at the conference tournament.
In the four hole for the Bobcats, Longstreth returns to the MAC Championships after a team-best 11th place finish at the conference tournament a year ago. Her best finish this season so far also came at the Lady Jaguar Invitational, playing in her hometown of Carmel, Ind. where she placed in a tie for 21st. Like many of the Bobcat golfers, Longstreth will look to capitalize on her late-season success with another successful MAC Championship.
Rounding out the lineup for Ohio, Vega-Rivera will be competing in her final tournament as a Bobcat. The senior came to Athens and has been one of Coach Ovington's best contributors over the last four seasons. Vega-Rivera has had a strong senior campaign, earning a season-best fourth-place finish at the Rocket Classic. A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Vega-Rivera will look to finish up her collegiate career with a worthy performance just 25-minutes from her hometown.
Ohio's substitute, Sloane Post has had a strong season in her second in the green and white. Her best finish of the season came at the Rocket Classic where she tied for 14th. If called upon, Post will look to mirror the same success she has had throughout the year.
Last Year at the MACs
As a team, Ohio placed eighth out of the ten MAC competitors while playing at the Kalamazoo Country Club. Leading the way for the Bobcats was Sydney Longstreth who finished tied for 11th with a score of 227 (+11). In 32nd-place, Mackenzie McRee finished with a 239 (+23). Mariana Vega-Rivera was the third best finisher for the Bobcats, placing in 40th with a total of 245 (+29).
