OXFORD, Ohio – The sixth-seeded Ohio field hockey team (7-11) concluded the 2024 season on Wednesday (Nov. 6), falling in the Mid-American Conference Quarterfinals to No. 3 Miami (11-7), 6-1, at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.
Overall, Ohio was outshot 22-8, with Miami recording 12 shots on goal to the Bobcats' three. Miami also tallied 11 penalty corners compared to Ohio's eight.
Individually, junior
Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) scored the Bobcats' lone goal, with an assist from freshman
Sophie Van Der Wal (Naarden, Holland). Graduate student
Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.) recorded four shots, with two on goal, while junior
Anouk Plaehn (Hanover, Germany) added two shots, with sophomore
Emily Risser (Palmyra, Pa.) recording one shot with one shot on goal.
In goal, graduate student
Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) played all 60 minutes, allowing six goals and making six saves.
Ohio and Miami were even for the first 10 minutes of the match before the RedHawks took a 2-0 lead after goals in the 11
th and 12
th minutes, both off penalty corners. After those two goals, the Ohio defense was able to hold the RedHawks for the remainder of the first and the second quarters, sending the game into halftime with Ohio still trailing, 2-0.
The second half saw Ohio keep Miami off the board for the start of the third quarter. However, Miami would go on to add two more goals in the quarter, scoring in the 35
th and 44
th minutes, increasing their lead to 4-0.
Ohio was able to break the shutout in fourth quarter when in the 47
th minute, with Dikotla scoring with an assist from Van Der Wal to cut the Miami lead to 4-1.
However, Miami added two more before the end of the fourth quarter, adding goals in the 50
th and 58
thminutes, securing the RedHawks' 6-1 victory.
