PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – Football is back in Athens for the first time in a month, while men's and women's golf wrap up their fall seasons, and soccer and field hockey wind down the regular season in a march to the MAC Championships. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (4-3, 2-1 MAC) is back in Athens for the first time in almost a month this Saturday, Oct. 26 when the Bobcats host Buffalo (4-3, 2-1 MAC). Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET at Frank Solich Field at Penden Stadium and can be seen on CBS Sports Network. Throughout the game, the Bobcats will be honoring the career of Frank Solich. 

Ohio is coming off a loss at Miami last weekend. Redshirt junior quarterback Nick Poulos (Granite Bay, Calif.) went 9-for-21 on 93 passing yards. Both quarterbacks contributed on the ground, with Navarro recording a team-best 38 rushing yards. Poulos finished just behind him, with 29 net yards and one touchdown. Graduate student running back Anthony Tyus III(Portage, Mich.) and redshirt junior running back Nolan McCormick (Mason, Ohio) scored a rushing touchdown each.
 
Redshirt senior punter Jack Wilson (Lancefield, Victoria, Australia) finished the day with seven punts, accumulating 304 yards. Two punts were over 50 yards, with his longest punt clocking in at 56 yards

Buffalo is coming off a 48-41 loss against Western Michigan on Saturday, but this season already has wins over Northern Illinois and Toledo. 

WOMEN'S GOLF
Oct. 21-22 / at 2024 Dayton Fall Invitational / Kettering, Ohio / NCR Country Club / All Day  / Live Results 

The women's golf team wraps up its fall slate this weekend when they head to Kettering, Ohio for the 2024 Dayton Fall Classic Oct. 21-22. The two-day event is hosted by Dayton and will take place at the NCR Country Club. 

Competing in this year's event is; Mercyhurst, Akron, Glenville State, Cleveland State, Dayton, Northern Kentucky, Toledo, Bowling Green and Butler. 

Competing for Ohio in this year's event are; senior Sydney Longstreth (Carmel, Ind.), sophomore Morgan Rodgers (Centerville, Ohio), sophomore Zoe Luebbers (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior Mackenzie McRee (Tucson, Ariz.), freshman Saylor Wharff (Marietta, Ohio) and senior Thanya Arasu (St. Johns, Fla.).   

The Bobcats last competed Oct. 7-8 at the 2024 bronco Classic, where Ohio placed second, with Luebbers finishing fourth overall as an individual.

The Ohio soccer team (9-2-4, 4-1-3 MAC) is back in action for two matches this week, including the regular season home finale. The week begins on Thursday, Oct. 24 when Ohio heads to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Buffalo (9-1-5, 4-1-3 MAC). First touch is set for 6 p.m. at UB Stadium and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then heads back to Chessa for the final time in the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 27 when they host Central Michigan (5-6-4, 3-2-3). First touch is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off just one game last week, falling to Toledo at home on Thursday. Ohio and Buffalo enter the matchup on Thursday tied for second in the Mid-American Conference standings with just three matches to go. 

Buffalo is coming off a 2-2 tie against Kent State at home on Thursday, while CMU is coming off a 2-1 win at BGSU on Thursday, and will face off with Miami on Thursday before making the trip to Athens.

The Ohio volleyball team (8-11, 4-4 MAC) is back in action this week for three matches. The week starts on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when Ohio hosts Kent State (1-17, 0-8 MAC). First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats then hit the road to Ypsilanti, Mich. for two matches with Eastern Michigan (12-11, 6-3 MAC). Ohio and the Eagles face off on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. and will conclude the weekend on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place inside the Gervin GameAbove Center and can be seen on ESPN+.  

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 week, with Ohio falling to Ball State in five sets on Friday, before defeating Miami on Saturday in four sets. In the match against Miami, junior Anna Kharchynska (Kyiv, Ukraine) led Ohio's offense with 17 kills, 18.0 points and a .500 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kam Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) was also a major offensive contributor, tallying 15 kills , two aces and 17.5 points. Graduate student Elizabeth Hoerlein (Mason, Ohio) and sophomore Olivia Gardner (Macomb, Mich.) contributed seven kills and 8.5 points each. Ohio's top two setters, junior Chariti McKeller (Toledo, Ohio) and freshman Bryn Janke (Westfield, Wis.), recorded 22 assists a piece. McKeller also had eight digs and Janke tallied five digs.
 
Kent State is coming off losses to Miami and Ball State last weekend, falling to the RedHawks in five before being swept by Ball State on Saturday. Eastern Michigan is coming off a 1-1 weekend, defeating NIU on Thursday, before defeating Western Michigan on Friday.

The Ohio field hockey team  (5-9, 2-4 MAC) is back in action for two more matches this week. The weekend begins on Friday, Oct. 25 when the Bobcats head to Muncie, Ind. for their final road match of the regular season to take on Ball State (3-10, 2-3 MAC). First touch is set for 3 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex. Ohio then returns to Athens on Sunday, Oct. 27 to face off against Davidson (6-6). First touch is set for 12 p.m. and can be seen on YouTube. Sunday's match will serve as the Bobcats Morgan's Message game. 

Ohio is coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss against Kent State on Sunday afternoon in Athens. 

Ball State enters the matchup after an 0-2 weekend where they fell to App State and Queens. The Cardinals will host UC Davis on Tuesday prior to hosting Ohio on Friday. Meanwhile, Davidson enters the matchup after a 2-0 victory over La Salle on Sunday. The Wildcats will face Lock Haven on Friday before heading to Athens. 

MEN'S GOLF

The Ohio men's golf team is back in action for their final event of the fall season Oct. 25-27 at the 2024 White Sands Bahamas Invitational. The three-day event is hosted by West Virginia at the Ocean Golf Club in Paradise Island, Bahamas. 

Competing in this year's event is; UC San Diego, West Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers-New Brunswick, Ball State, Houston, College of Charleston, George Mason, Emory, NIU and EMU. 

The Bobcats last competed Oct. 14-15 at the RedHawk Intercollegiate in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Bobcats finished in a tie for 11th, while senior Sam Hogan (Burlington, Canada) placed sixth overall. Individually, Hogan led the Bobcats, recording rounds of 71 and 68 on day one before finishing Tuesday with a 69 for a total tournament score of 208 (-5), securing a three-way tie for 6th place. Hogan picked up three birdies and one eagle, carding a 3 on the 555 yard par five 15th hole. Hogan was the best player in the tournament on Par 4s, shooting -7 in the tournament.
