Ohio Field Hockey Falls to Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio (3-4) traveled to Columbus for a nonconference game against Ohio State (9-2) Sunday afternoon. After a hard-fought match, Ohio headed home with a 3-2 loss.

The Bobcats were lead by fifth year Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.), who scored two goals off of three shots. This was Whittle's second consecutive game scoring two goals, when she scored two against Kent State Friday (Sept. 22). The Bobcats totaled nine shots with five coming on target.

Senior goalkeeper Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) played all 60 minutes, tallying 11 saves on 14 shots on goal.

The pressure was on immediately after Leanne Bough scored a goal for the Buckeyes three minutes into the period. Bough scored off a penalty corner by Makenna Webster.

Neither team scored in the second period, but Ohio had several chances. Ohio opened the period with two penalty corners by Whittle. Sophomore back Anouk Plaehn (Hanover, Germany) and senior back Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.) both took a shot at the net, but Ohio State blocked both, leaving Ohio empty handed in the second.

Ohio tied the game in the third period when Whittle put a rebound into the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season. Minutes later, Whittle scored another goal to give Ohio the lead. However, Ohio State bounced back with a goal to tie the game at 2-2.

Ohio's defense put together a strong effort to keep Ohio State from capturing a win. Lotze racked up 11 saves over the afternoon. It was a valiant effort, but Ohio State had other plans.

The Buckeyes found a gap in the defense during the final minutes of the fourth period, and Webster scored the game-winning goal.
