ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio men's basketball team has added guard Shereef Mitchell to the roster for the 2023-24 season, head coach
Jeff Boals announced today (April 19). Mitchell, a four-year contributor at Creighton, joins the Bobcats with two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited to add Shereef to our basketball program," Boals said. "He has been well coached and has many winning qualities coming from Creighton. He will positively impact us on the court and in the locker room."
In his four seasons at Creighton, the elite Big East defender played in 99 games for the Bluejays, while making four starts. He averaged 11.8 minutes a game and is a career 71.0 percent free throw shooter. In his time at Creighton, Mitchell played in seven NCAA Tournament games, including five wins, which is the second-most in Creighton program history. This season, Mitchell helped lead the Bluejays to the elite Eight, where they fell to the eventual national runners-up, San Diego State by one point.
This season, the Omaha, Neb. native had four assists and tied career-high with three steals in win vs. North Dakota and had four assists and three steals vs. Holy Cross. He scored a season-high seven points and dished two assists in win vs. UC Riverside. He buried career-high three three-pointers to score nine points in 15 minutes of road win at St. John's and scored eight points and added three rebounds and an assist in win vs. Georgetown.
During the 2021-22 season, Mitchell played in six games before his season ended due to injury, where he was granted a medical redshirt.
In his sophomore campaign, Mitchell played in 30 games, averaging 3.3 points, while grabbing 22 steals. That season Creighton allowed 1.60 points per minute with him on the floor, compared to 1.74 points per minute when he was out of the game. In his freshman year, Mitchell became only the third Creighton true freshman in 20 years to start the season-opener.
Prior to his time at Creighton, Mitchell played for Omaha Burke High School and was named the Nebraska's Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year as a senior. He was also named an honorary captain of the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star's All-Nebraska teams in 2017-18.
Mitchell also played AAU for the OSA Crusaders with current Ohio point guard,
Jaylin Hunter.
Mitchell is the son of Alvin and Sheree Mitchell and has two brothers, Darrnell and Caleb.
