Ohio Softball Concludes Series Sweep of Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (13-14, 4-2 MAC) returned to action Sunday afternoon, sweeping Bowling Green (8-18, 1-5 MAC) in a doubleheader. Ohio took game one, 13-4 in five innings, before taking game two, 6-1. The wins helped the Bobcats complete the three-game sweep of the Falcons.
 
GAME ONE: Ohio 13, Bowling Green 4 (Five Innings)
Overall, Ohio scored 13 runs on 16 hits and committed one error, while Bowling Green scored four runs on seven hits and did not commit an error. 
 
Individually, freshman Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) led the Bobcats, going 2-for-2 with two homeruns, two runs scored and four RBI, junior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added two hits, a triple, a homerun and three RBI, while junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run scored and three RBI. Freshman Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while junior Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sophomore Reagan Farmer (Baltimore, Ohio) added a homerun, run scored and RBI, while junior Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) added two hits for Ohio. Sophomore CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) added a double and a run scored, while senior Kaci Branch (Villa Park, Calif.) and sophomore Maddie Wilcox (Grove City, Ohio) both had pinch-hit singles for the Bobcats. 
 
In the circle, graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) got the start, pitching two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits, while walking two and striking out one. Freshman Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) entered the game in the third inning, pitching three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while walking one and striking out three. 
 
The Bobcats threatened to get on the board early when Logan reached with a one out triple. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the inning still scoreless. Bowling Green struck first, taking an early by scoring two runs on two hits and one error, taking a 2-0 lead after one.
 
Ohio responded immediately in the top of the second. With one out, Farmer and Westler hit back-to-back homeruns, both career firsts. Keidel then doubled to center and moved to third on a single from O'Brien. Moments later, Keidel scored on a ground out from Hummel, putting Ohio up 3-2 going into the bottom of the second. 
 
After Bowling Green stranded two in the bottom of the second, the Ohio offense continued to flourish in the top of the third. Paoli led off the inning with a triple to right center, scoring on a ground out by sophomore Emma Hoffner (New Stanyon, Pa.). After Grein doubled and Farmer drew a walk, Westler hit her second homerun of the day, this one a three-run shot to put Ohio up 6-2. Ohio wasn't finished in the inning. After O'Brien and Hummel both reached on singles, Logan crushed her own three-run shot to left. In the end, the Bobcats scored seven runs on six hits, putting Ohio up 10-2 going into the bottom of the third. 
 
After a scoreless top of the fourth for the Bobcats, Bowling Green threatened to cut into the Ohio lead, reaching base on a single and a walk. However, the Ohio defense was able to get the next two BGSU batters out sending the game to the fifth inning with the Bobcats leading, 10-2. 
 
The Bobcats added on in the top of the fifth. After Branch led the inning off with a pinch-hit single, pinch-hitter Wilcox followed it up with a hit of her own. Moments later, Hummel singled to load the bases with no outs. Then with one out, Paoli registered a three-RBI double to right, clearing the bases and giving Ohio a 13-2 lead going to the bottom of the fifth. 
 
Bowling Green looked to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth, cutting into Ohio's lead with a two-run homerun with one out. However, Moore and the Ohio defense were able to get the final two batters to foul out and strike out, securing Ohio's 13-4 five-inning victory. 
 
GAME TWO: Ohio 6, Bowling Green 1
Overall, Ohio scored six runs on eight hits and committed one error, while Bowling Green scored one run on five hits and committed one error. 
 
Individually, Keidel went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, while O'Brien recorded two hits, a triple and one RBI. Westler went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Logan had a double and a RBI. Paoli and Hoffner both recorded doubles, while Hummel registered an RBI and a run scored for the Bobcats. 
 
In the circle, redshirt freshman Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing one run, none earned, on five hits, while walking two and striking out seven. 

Ohio threatened early in the top of the first when Paoli reached on a two-out double. However, Ohio was unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the inning still scoreless. Ohio finally struck in the top of the third inning. Keidel led the inning off with a double to left center and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Moments later, O'Brien tripled to right, scoring Keidel, putting Ohio up 1-0 going into the bottom of the third. 
 
After a scoreless fourth inning for Ohio, BGSU attempted to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, getting runners on with back-to-back singles. However, the Ohio defense was able to get the final batter of the inning to ground out, helping keep Ohio's one-run lead intact.
 
Bowling Green finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an error. 
 
Ohio responded immediately in the top of the seventh inning. Hoffner led the inning off with a double to center. With one out, Westler put the Bobcats back up with a two-RBI single. Keidel followed that up with an RBI double. After Hummel reached on a fielder's choice, an RBI double from Logan increased the Ohio lead. Overall, in the inning, Ohio scored five runs on five hits to help give Ohio the 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the inning.  
 
Bowling Green looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, getting a runner on with one out. However, Miller and the Ohio defense were able to get the final two batters of the game out, securing the 6-1 win. 
 
UP NEXT
Ohio returns to action March 28-29 for a three-game series at Akron. The Bobcats and the Zips open play on Tuesday, March 28 at 3 p.m., while the two teams conclude the series on Wednesday, March 29 with a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
