Ohio Softball Splits Final Day of Tennessee Tech Tournament

COOKVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio softball team (9-12) returned to action on Saturday afternoon (March 11) to conclude the 2023 Tennessee Tech Tournament. Ohio opened the day falling to Robert Morris (7-10), 4-3, before returning later in the afternoon, defeating Tennessee Tech (1-20), 8-3. 
 
GAME ONE: Robert Morris 4, Ohio 3
Overall, Ohio scored three runs on six hits and committed one error, while Robert Morris scored four runs on six hits and did not commit an error.
 
Individually, senior Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while freshman Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) had two hits and a run scored. Junior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had one hit and a run scored, while freshman Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) added a hit and an RBI. 
 
In the circle, freshman Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking five and striking out five. 
 
Robert Morris got on the board first in the top of the first inning, scoring a run on two hits and one error to give them the early 1-0 lead. Ohio got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Dawe reached on a leadoff single down the left field line. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the third inning with RMU leading, 1-0. 
 
The Bobcats threatened again in the bottom of the fourth inning after Hummel led off with an infield single. She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground out. However, Ohio was once again unable to capitalize, sending the game to the fifth inning with Robert Morris still leading, 1-0. 
 
RMU added on in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on one hit to take a 3-0 lead going to the bottom of the frame. 
 
Ohio rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Hummel singled and moved to second on a single from Logan. After junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, a two-RBI single from Dawe put the Bobcats on the board with runners on first and third with one out. After sophomore Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice, Westler singled to left, scoring Dawe, tying the game at 3-3 going into the top of the seventh inning. 
 
RMU retook the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring a run on an RBI single to go up 4-3 headed into the final frame. 
 
Ohio attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh after Hummel drew a two-out walk. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, falling 4-3. 
 
GAME TWO: Ohio 8, Tennessee Tech 3
Overall, Ohio scored eight runs on 11 hits and did not commit an error, while Tennessee Tech scored three runs on eight hits and did not commit an error. 
 
Individually, Hoffner went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Paoli had two hits, RBI and a run scored. Dawe finished the day with two hits and an RBI, while Logan added a hit and two RBI. Hummel finished the game with a hit, RBI and run scored, while junior Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) finished with a hit and two runs scored. Westler added a hit as will, while junior Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) drew three walks and scored two runs. 
 
In the circle, graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) got the start and pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while not walking a batter and striking out four. 
 
The Bobcats struck in the top of the second inning. After Hoffner singled to lead off the inning, Grein was hit by a pitch. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, sophomore CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) drew a walk to load the bases. Moments later, O'Brien drew her own walk, scoring Hoffner, and putting Ohio up 1-0. Later in the inning, Logan singled down the right field line and was followed by a sacrifice fly from Paoli, putting Ohio up 4-0 after two innings. 
 
Tennessee Tech got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on four hits to cut the Ohio lead to 4-2 after three innings. 
 
The Bobcats got the runs back in the top of the fourth. After O'Brien and Hummel drew walks and stole bases to put runners on second and third with no outs, Logan recorded a sacrifice fly, putting Ohio up 5-2. Then with two outs, an RBI single from Dawe allowed Hummel to score, giving the Bobcats a 6-2 lead. 
 
After a scoreless fifth for Ohio, Tennessee Tech was able to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a solo homerun to cut the Ohio lead to 6-3 after five full frames. However, Ohio got the run back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring a run on an RBI single from Hoffner, increasing Ohio's lead to 7-3.  
 
Ohio added a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single from Hummel, helping secure the 8-3 win for the Bobcats. 
 
UP NEXT
Ohio finally returns home to open Mid-American Conference play March 17-18 when they host Miami. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m. at the OSF, while Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
