ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (10-2, 1-0 MAC) opened Mid-American Conference play today (March 17) against their rival, Miami RedHawks (12-8, 0-1 MAC), at the Ohio Softball Field. They won the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2, and fell in game two, 7-6.
Individually, sophomore
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) led the way, going 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored while junior
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) recorded a .500 batting average on the day, finishing with three hits, one home run and three runs scored. Junior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) went 2-for-6 and recorded a team-high five RBIs, three of which were driven in with a three-run home run.
On the mound, sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) threw all seven innings of game one, allowing two runs on five hits. Freshman
Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) and graduate student
Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) split the second game, recording a combined nine strikeouts.
GAME ONE: Ohio 4, Miami 2
Miami got out to an early 2-0 lead with a solo homerun and an RBI double, giving the RedHawks a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Ohio responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame. With one out, junior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) drew a walk and moved to second on a single from Paoli. After both advanced on an infield single from senior Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.), a two-RBI double from Hoffner tied the game at 2-2. Then with two outs, a two-RBI single from Grein put Ohio up 4-2 after the first full inning of play.
Ohio threatened to add on in the bottom of the third inning. After Dawe was hit by a pitch, she moved to second when Hoffner reached on a fielding error, putting runners on first and second with no outs. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the fourth inning with Ohio leading, 4-2.
The Bobcats held the RedHawks for the rest of the game, solidifying their 4-2 victory.
GAME TWO: Ohio 6, Miami 7
The RedHawks struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with two solo homers. In the bottom of the inning, the Bobcats got on the board with a groundout. After a two-run home run from Miami in the third, Ohio surged ahead in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single from Hoffner kicked things off, followed by a three-run home run by Grein to put the Bobcats ahead, 5-4.
Miami took the lead in the top of the fourth with their second two-run home run of the day, but Paoli answered in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot of her own, tying the game, 6-6. The RedHawks' fifth homer of the day gave them a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Dawe led off with a single through the right side, but the Bobcats were unable to tie the game, falling 7-6.
Up next, the Bobcats return to action on Saturday, March 18 for the third and final game in their Battle of the Bricks series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the OSF.
