ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (10-14, 1-2 MAC) returned to action Saturday afternoon (March 18), falling to Miami (14-8, 2-1 MAC), 14-1 at the Ohio Softball Field.
Overall, Ohio scored one run on five hits and committed two errors, while Miami scored 14 runs on 11 hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, junior Annalia Poli (Point Marion, Pa.) had one double, while senior
Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) had one hit, a run scored and drew two walks. Sophomore
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) added a hit, as did junior
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio), while senior
Kaci Branch (Villa Park, Calif.) recorded a single and an RBI.
In the circle, redshirt freshman
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out one. Freshman
Keegan Moore (Ironton, Ohio) entered the game to pitch 1.1 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits, while walking one and striking out one. Sophomore
Ellie Greene (Attica, Mich.) entered the game to pitch 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out one.
Miami struck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run homerun. Ohio threatened in the bottom of the frame when Dawe drew a two-out walk. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the seconding inning trailing 2-0.
Miami added on in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs on three hits and one error, including a three-run homerun to put the RedHawks up 7-0 going to the bottom of the second. After a scoreless bottom of the second for Ohio, Miami added on in the top of the third on a leadoff homerun, taking an 8-0 lead to the bottom of the third.
Ohio picked up its first hit in the bottom of the third on an infield single by O'Brien, however, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize. The RedHawks' bats continued to take advantage, scoring six runs on three hits and one error to take a 14-0 lead going to the bottom of the fourth.
Ohio was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Dawe began the inning with an infield single and moved to second when Hoffner reached on a single up the middle. Moments later, Dawe was able to score on a pinch-hit RBI single from Branch. Ohio was able to load the bases with no outs after junior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) reached on a walk, however, Ohio was unable to add on, ending the inning with Ohio trailing, 14-1.
After Miami was held scoreless in the top of the fifth, Ohio got two runners on in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Paoli doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Although Dawe drew another walk to put runners on first and third with one out, Ohio was unable to take advantage, falling 14-1.
Up next, Ohio heads to Bowling Green March 24-25 to take on the Falcons. Ohio will play one game on Friday at 3 p.m., with a doubleheader on Saturday set to start at 1 p.m.
